UPDATE WITH US PICS!!Anyone think they just had a "gunshy" US tech re gender?

Here's my situation. With DS#3 I had the US think around 19, 20 weeks , maybe even later and was told boy, but as we were about done got this whole big spiel about it can always be wrong, not sure, genitals can be swollen etc. So we had a few doubts for about 2 weeks but after checking other pics online were then super sure it was a boy. Perhaps she just had a recent "bad call"? Or that is the standard disclaimer.....

This week I had my US, same tech, and yes, I did go a little early this time. They have me at 18 weeks so ob said I could go, I think I'm a few days earlier, maybe really 17wk, 4d, so my bad.

Anyhoo, she had a hard time seeing a boy part, but could see "something", adn then we saw 3 lines at the end(which can also be boy btw), but no obvious scrotum. She is not sure if it is a swollen girl protrusion part or a boy protrusion hiding.

But when I look at the two shots she gave me they look very boy. In the end she said she couldn't tell, but was leaning boy. The more I compare online it seems very boy and I'm wondering is it just THIS TECH who is not willing to make a call. If so I'm kinda annoyed as I will be going to a 3D place to confirm as it's driving me crazy not knowing, yep, not the suprise type.

Anyone else get a shot that they thought was fairly obvious, but tech was not willing to make a call?

With my other two boys, different tech, we were told It's a boy with no disclaimer etc, same hospital.

To me I would 100% guess boy if I saw these online. I think her problem with "calling it" is when the potty shot is straight on(these are angled from behind), she cannot see a scrotum, she see's 3 lines(which I guess could be the dots) and can't tee if it's a boy protrusion or a girl one. Not like some US of boys were you see a very visible boy protrusion between legs, could just be floating up IMO.

Oh, I should also mention that my first questions to her(she barely said a word for first 10 mins) was if the baby was ok, moving, cord vessels, placenta etc ok. She was not excactly the informative type and even said "if I talk it will take me twice as long to get the measurements".....mmmm......I know I'm paying through insurance and myself about $1500, you'd think a bit of bedside manner would come standard......

Re: Anyone think they just had a "gunshy" US tech re gender?

Ugh. my 12 week dating U/S tech was like that. She was basically like "shut up and let me do my job, this isn't about you." but in nicer words. But then again, at 12 weeks you're still pretty hormonal... lol I didn't ask about the sex because I knew that it was too soon.

My 20 week US the tech said "Oh yeah, that's definitely a boy!" and when I reconfirmed with my OB her response was "those parts generally don't fall off, so I'd trust the tech!"
Having said that, I'm the only one of any of my friends/family that have gotten a definite answer from a tech... they generally try to cover their rears in a "I can't guarantee it 100%, but it appears to be..." sort of way.

Re: Anyone think they just had a "gunshy" US tech re gender?

I suppose the medical profession is a funny one as in reality, I am paying for it, insurance is a fortune(ok for my DH's bosses) but all my deductibles are high as it's a small business, so I know exactly how much is being paid, but yet you feel like you should just lay there and be quiet?

Part of me was, oh, I'd rather her concentrate and do the job well, but the other part was saying, jeez, you can't even say....oh there's the baby.....

I had a dating scan at the same place, different tech and she was so nice and reassuring.

I get them covering themselves, but I really really think with my first US with her it was so so obvious. This might be a little more evasive, but I'm starting to think it was just the tech now?

Re: Anyone think they just had a "gunshy" US tech re gender?

My 3 girls have been very clearly girls so we never got a disclaimer. I even remember asking after my 1st how sure she was about it being a girl and she just laughed and said something like "sometimes I can just say I think but that kid is not shy, there is not a doubt in my mind". My other two have been just like that.

As for the talking and asking questions with my last (which were at the same hospital) the tech actually gave us a spiel before she started that she understood we were very excited but it was very important she get all the appropriate measurements accurate so she asked us not to ask any questions and told us we could talk quietly between us while she was actually doing the measurements. Then when she was sure she got everything she needed that she would be more than happy to go back through and show us anything we wanted to see seperately.

Re: Anyone think they just had a "gunshy" US tech re gender?

I'm so sorry! I never had that happen. With DS, I was at Kaiser and she told me exactly what she was measuring and why and showed me the gender (at 16 weeks, she said I'm pretty sure it's a boy). I had another one at 22 weeks and clearly, DS is a boy.
For DD we had an obgyn perform the scan and the first thing he showed us, literally after putting the probe on my belly was "quite obvious, this is a girl! See the hamburger bun?" (that's what he jokingly calls the three lines for girls). That was at 23 weeks though, and both my kids weren't shy and allowed a full view

Re: Anyone think they just had a "gunshy" US tech re gender?

All the genders have always been OUT THERE obvious for us, so we haven't ever had anyone act unsure. And that is even with going in way early for the specific purpose of knowing gender.

As for the tech, we have NEVER had any of them explain to us what they were doing, we just thought that was the norm. It was the worst with Zoee at 20 weeks because they took forever, didn't have the screen anywhere that we could see it, so we were just staring at a wall. Really annoying.

Anyway, this time around the place my MW suggested was going to charge up almost $300 AFTER insurance. My MW had a guy that came to your house and did it for only $130. Oh my gosh, we are never going anywhere again. 1) We didn't have to entertain 3 kids in a small office. 2) He was HILARIOUS. 3) He was a specialist and has been doing it forever, he knows his stuff. 4) He talked to us the entire time. Told us exactly what he was measuring and why, how it looked, etc. For us to have never been explained anything on the U/S screen beyond the gender it was so amazing. And last, he was done in not even 15 minutes and then proceeded to play with our kids for about 10 minutes.

I was also going to suggest posting pictures too. I have had a very confident tech all three times, so no guessing here. I was unsure of the first, because it was my first and the shot I got didn't convince me 100%. He was right that time and with my second. I am guessing he is right this time too, because we got a nice clear shot.
