Fifth's disease

Has anyone been diagnosed with fifth's disease while pregnant…particularly later in pregnancy? I am 6 months pregnant and have been exposed and so now I'm waiting. I'm just curious what the protocol is if I do in fact get it.

Thanks.

Waiting for what? Symptoms or test results... Did you know you can have a blood test to see if you already have immunities for Fifth Disease. It is like Chicken pox you are only supposed to get it once. Chances are you've been exposed as a child. I was tested while pregnant and have the immunities so that's where my experience ends, but you should definatly tell your doctor if you haven't already.

I had it with my first child. I thought I'd had it as a kid, but I was wrong. I got a lacy red rash so when they did a blood test it came back positive. They test for some form of Parvo, gross, I know. So I was diagnosed at 18wks. All they do is monitor through ultrasound weekly to check for fluid in the heart, and I want to say brain (in the fetus) She ended up being totally fine and is now a rotten almost 8yr old! ; ).

Re: Fifth's disease

I've never had it, pregnant or otherwise (as far as I know). However, I used to teach preschool and one year we had an "outbreak" (three kids in a class of 15), and one of the kids who caught it took it home to her aunt (whose son was in the same class...ironically, he never caught it), who was pregnant at the time. She was closer to her due date than you are. She had some issues with the remainder of her pregnancy, and while I don't know all of the details, her baby was born early. He had a few issues, I think more due to being early than her exposure to Fifth's disease, but he is perfectly healthy today and that was seven years ago.

Not trying to worry you. Like I said, this mom was closer to her due date than you. I believe she was into her seventh month when exposed. Talk to your doctor. They will do a blood test to see your immunity level. Chances are you were already exposed as a child, like the pp said, and there is nothing to worry about. If not, they will monitor you very closely. Don't worry. I know it's easy to say and hard to do, but it really does you and baby no good to get stressed out over something that might very well be a non-issue.

They did do a blood test to check if I had immunity to it, and I don't So now I'm waiting to see if I come down with it. I know I only have a 50% chance of it but that seems kind of high right now.

My daughter got it at the beginning of this most recent pregnancy (I was like 12 ish weeks along) and the ped said it is very rare to have complications at all and the complication is premature birth. My OB agreed that it isn't something to be overly concerned about but they may monitor you a bit more than normal.

My dd and the daycare child I took care of got it while I was pg with ds. I was tested, never had it and I also never got it. I'm not sure what happens if you do get it (I've heard it's bad to have it early in your pg but I've also heard it's bad to have it late in your pg).

I got it when I was 12 weeks along but it turns out I had immunity to it. I've heard that it's only really dangerous in early pregnancy- like under 20 weeks. If you do get it for sure they will monitor you more closely and do a lot more ultrasounds to make sure the baby is doing okay.

Re: Fifth's disease

So the doctor called me this morning and it turns out I have it. So they scheduled an appointment with the mfm specialist for closer monitoring. I'm sure the chance of her developing complications from this isn't high but I feel better that they will be monitoring me closer. The fatigue and muscle weakness have been pretty bad - so much for the energy spurt in the second trimester

Re: Fifth's disease

Please read this information. It is unlikely to have a complication but it does happen.
