The incredibly precipitous homebirth of Cole Blake
If this sounds totally unbelievable, its because even my midwife couldn't believe it! I only have exact times because I read the report from the birth yesterday, lol. I assure you, I was not watching the clock.
The week before Cole was born, at my 37 week appointment, I was 50% effaced and dilated to 6 cm. My midwife scheduled my home visit for the following Monday, but didn't expect me to make it that long. I spent the next week scurrying around getting everything ready for his birth, as I expected Cole to arrive at any moment. Then I stayed pregnant. And stayed pregnant. And stayed pregnant. My home visit came on Monday, December 5th, at 10 a.m. I asked my midwife if she would check my cervix again, since I had felt the baby drop more the day before. I was at 7-8 cm, 100% effaced, +1 station. And not contracting. I asked her to strip my membranes and she said there wasn't anything to strip, so she just moved my cervix around a bit to see if it would get me contracting. While we waited to see if I would contract, she called her birth team and started setting up the birth tub, while I called my husband to come home from work. We planned to break my water when my husband got home. My husband got home around noon, and I was contracting regularly, but the contractions were merely uncomfortable. I had a lot of anxiety about breaking my water, as I had a very bad (painful) experience with AROM during my ODS's birth. I had her check my cervix again to see if the contractions were actually doing anything, and I was at 9 cm. I told her I'd prefer not to break my bag and just see what happened if I pushed with the contractions. At 12:40 my husband and I climbed into the birth tub, and I started pushing with the contractions. Pushing was painful, as he was caught on the lip of my cervix and my midwife was trying to pull aside the lip to help me move him down, but we were all laughing and joking between my contractions. At 1:05 my water broke on its own, and he immediately started to push past the lip. This was the point where I started crying that I didn't want to push and begging my midwife not to make me. I finally sucked it up and pushed him past the lip, and on the next push exclaimed, "OH THAT FEELS GOOD!" At 1:22 he was crowning, and 1:24 Cole Blake was born at home, in the water. He weighed 8 lbs, 4 oz, and was 20 inches long. Had my home visit not been that morning, I have no doubt that my midwife (and likely my husband) would have missed the birth.
