Re: HELLP Syndrome
I had it, luckily he only had to come via emergency c-section 10 days early, but I had had symptoms going on for quite some time and had been in and out of the doc and hospital keeping an eye on things. To clarify, it's not two steps above pre-e - it is a FORM of pre - e, and I believe the most severe/rare.

It's sad to me how many cases of HELLP have been missed until it's too late. When I first met with the doc that helped me through my second pregnancy and told him my history, he sat there and shook his head. He told me in not so many words that I'm not the first to have had this story from my previous doc. He said he couldnt promise a different outcome, but watching for these things is what a doctor is there to do. Quote:
Really? Do you have research links to back this up? It's been a while since I studied, but last I knew of the two are often go hand in hand, but not always. From what I understood HELLP syndrome can be a complication of Pre-E and rarely happens without Pre-E but is in and of itself a different condition. I'll be very interested to know if that is outdated research!

Re: HELLP Syndrome
HELLP syndrome is one of the most severe forms of preeclampsia and occurs in 5-12% of preeclamptic patients.

Re: HELLP Syndrome
I had Hellp with my first (delivered at 36 weeks after about 3 weeks bedrest) and third (delivered at 37 weeks after 9 looong weeks of bed rest!). My current midwife told me to look into a magnesium supplement as prevention. I've been taking it since I was about 10-12 weeks and so far so good this time around
The one pregnancy I didnt have hellp issues in I had pre term labor issue. Because of contractions I ended up getting magnesium injections about every two weeks from 29 weeks to when my little man was born at 35 weeks.

I had severe pre-eclampsia with mild hellp syndrome. I just luckily had a dr appointment that day & my blood pressure took a huge spike to 188/100. From what I gathered I was about to start seizures. So I was rushed to hospital put on magnesium which is horrible. Then got my blood pressure under control @ was doing well enough they were going to send me home on bed rest but at 3:47 that next morning babies heart rate dropped & they had to take her emergency c section. I was told me & baby were both pretty lucky so I thank GOD daily for taking care of us. I think I'm stopping at this one though because although I know it wasn't my fault I couldn't bear to have another baby go through all that.

Re: HELLP Syndrome
I realize this post was started quite a while ago and hope everything worked out for the original poster! I don't think I had HELLP but did have severe pre-e. At first when they admitted me at week 36 they weren't quite sure what was going on. My blood pressure sky rocketed every time I moved from laying on my left side. They should have started mag then. Mag wasn't kicked on until they decided to induce so I had it through labor and 24 hours after. Immediately after pushing my blood pressure was 215/160 (ish) I can't remember the exact numbers. They kicked the mag up higher and constantly came around to check my reflexes. Turns out I have Chronic Kidney disease and was at very high risk for pre-e, should have been a high risk pregnancy from the start. We're trying for another now despite knowing I'll probably have it again. We have an amazing specialist now and will have ultra sounds weekly from the start. It sounds crazy but I want our daughter to have a sibling and then we're cutting it off!
