We have 2 tegu sets (52 pieces total, some are missing) and a Magnetos set (100 pieces), honestly my 2 year old's (and 5 yr old's) FAVORITE toy is the Magnetos, there are far more building options (house, parking garage, castle, towers, zoo, train stations, etc.). The Tegu block are fun but more so for the grownups they can only connect certain ways and the sets are small, with 2 sets you still can't build a "structure". They actually enjoyed the Tegu blocks more when they were young toddlers for just easy stacking, but became bored quickly I'd say my bang for the buck was Magnetos, since I foresee my kids using them into middle school (geometry . I'm not big on plastic toys either so I totally understand- just thought I'd share our experience

Mrs Lovewell, I couldn't find any recent deals on Tegu but you can set up a search on stealengine.com and it will notify you by email when the item you want goes on sale :-)
