Re: May 2011 Mamas - May chat! Happy Birthday!

JUSTINE - Those pictures are adorable! The snuggling babies. Oh squish. All I can think though, after I get over how cute it is, is how DS would never sleep in a bed with anyone else. How do you get that to happen?? He's got to be in the crib, with the sound machine, lights off, perfect time, to even think of sleep happening.

Oh man, the potty. That kind of a thing hasn't even crossed my mind. At all. Am I supposed to be thinking about that??

Week is going downhill. DS is entering into his next Wonder Week I can tell. We had a glorious month of 12-hour nights and general good humor. But now it's all clinginess, waking up early and multiple times, and not wanting to eat or nurse. I just keep saying "This too shall pass!" Doesn't help that he has a horrible diaper rash with open welts. Poor bub.

DS's bday is May 21! And then a week later we leave on our cruise to Alaska! Can't wait! I'll have my parents and my brother and his girlfriend as free babysitting the whole time. I have so many plans for massages, cocktails and casino time!!!

Justine - side note. How do you get such good pictures? What kind of camera and settings do you use? I can't ever get the sharp foreground/blurry background look.

Happy birthday Toby and to you Rachel. DD's birthday is the 19th. I'm so excited and yet so heartbroken about it... Sigh.

Julia--I sometimes put DD to sleep with DS just because DH works late and can't help often. She will sleep in her crib for nap after nursing to sleep but won't otherwise sleep in there. Sometimes I wish she would because I don't get much sleep and it complicates getting both kids to sleep on my own. She nurses a lot at night to make up for dodging my boobs during her busy baby days. Anyway, I turn the lights on after they're conked out to get pictures before moving her to my bed. my camera base is a beat up old Canon Rebel XT but the lens is a 50mm f/1.4. The wider aperture is what gives you the out of focus background. You could adjust your camera for a wider aperture (lower #) What kind of camera do you use? I'm pretty amateur but I love taking photos. I had the 1.8 50mm before but it's not as well made and I broke it twice (I'm super rough and a tad careless). If you have a similar camera and take good care of your equipment you may like the 1.8. It's a really good value. I'm sorry you're having a rough go with your DS lately. What are the wonder weeks you guys keep mentioning? I'm guessing it's a heavy developmental period. It's a book right? What's it called/ who's it by? I'd like to check it out. thanks!!

Re: May 2011 Mamas - May chat! Happy Birthday!

Well, Toby's birthday was pretty uneventful, we are having his birthday party in two weeks, just due to schedules and Mother's Day next week I am still struggling with him not crawling, but I keep trying to remember that every baby is different. He is really wanting to just stand and walk. I know I keep writing about that, but I can't get past it yet

He has 8 teeth still, but I think we are working on molars

I haven't made his 12 month appt yet, but I am anxious to see if he has finally gained weight since he is an eating machine! He feels heavier for sure and has kind of flown through all our 12 month clothes, so I am ready to pull out 18 month clothes!

Justineybean - I was never someone who thought they could do boudoir pics, but as long as they are for me and my DH, then I think I am ok and I think it will help me see myself in a better way. Also, that book is http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/9079208043/ref=nosim/chrisficti-20

On another note, we are really struggling with my older son, Quinn. He is going to be 3 in August and he has turned into this child that I don't even know half the time. He shrieks at the top of his lungs, hits everyone, kicks the dogs, tries to beat his brother, takes everything from him...the list goes on. I try to stay calm and deal with him in a way that is loving and yet firm and attached. But...sometimes, I just want to S C R E A M!!!! There are days I live, absolutely live for bedtime. I know it is normal, but it has really struck me hard lately, he was just my love bug and the other day he said "I don't like you" and my heart just broke

Anyhow...here are pics from Toby's birthday! We are having his one year pics done tomorrow, so I will share them when I get them back!

Rachel-- I'm so sorry you're struggling with your older son! It made me so sad thinking about you just waiting for bedtime. I can totally relate. My DS is 4 and he's always been very laid back but he's screaming and pushing DD and snatching things from her and nothing I can say makes him stop or understand why he can't do that. I feel certain it's a stage and it will get better. and I do yell and feel so guilty but like I said I just can't get his attention and don't even know what to do sometimes. its hard. Good luck with your photos. The reasons you said you wanted to do them seemed like it would be great for you and your DH. Thanks also for the link to the book. What age do the wonder weeks continue through? I was just wondering if it's too late to read now if it's just for the first year or something?

Re: May 2011 Mamas - May chat! Happy Birthday!

Justine - I think the book goes through the first 2 years? There's a website www.thewonderweeks.com - okay it looks like 17 months - or so. The book is nice to peruse, but mostly I use it to compare DS's age against the chart of "stormy" weeks and "sunshine" weeks. (The "Wonder" Weeks are the stormy/fussy ones.) I also pull it out when DS is having a particularly fussy time to remind myself that it's just a phase and everything he's doing is normal. I was surprised that DS follows the weeks fairly close - only he seems to go through them a couple weeks early. You could see if your library has it? If you're going to have another baby at some point, I'd say it's worth it. It's interesting.

Camerawise I use a Nikon D80. Usually I just leave it on Auto everything because DS moves so darn fast I like to get the shot. So it's the lens you're using then? I haven't ventured into buying lenses yet - but I'd be interested if there was one I could just leave on. I love that look and it makes pictures look more professional (when I'm not at all!)

Rachel - Happy Birthday to Toby! I'm sorry that you're having issues with your older son. And Justine you too. Do you think it's a reaction to having a new baby/not being the only? Honestly, I only have DS and I live for bedtime each. and. every. day. I think it's normal and OKAY to need that decompressing time. After DS goes to bed I finally feel like I can stop and breathe and relax.

We're enjoying sunshine this weekend and supposedly this week! Had a busy weekend. Took DS to the consignment store to get new clothes. Found a tshirt I actually thought about buying him new (Has a pic of Bob Marley and says "B is for Bob". LOVE.) And lots of pants. We always seem to need pants. Painted our LR. Today we went and got bagels and went to a local park and walked around. DS fell asleep in the car on the way home and DH and I took a nice Sunday drive. The weekends are over way too fast, though. In a couple weeks my mom is coming for a visit so it will be nice for someone else to entertain DS for awhile (namely read him books. He could be read books ALL DAY. I finally hid them...)

Rachel DARLING pictures!

Julia your posts crack me up because we'd be squabbling over who got to buy the Bob shirt! My kid are the only ones in our tiny town walking around in shirts like that or Beatles.

Yearning for bedtime...oh yes. Right now it is with my 10 year old. She is turning into a sassy preteen and I am trying hard to remember my sweet little chubby cheek girl in braids and a smile...where did those days go?! Here are some pics...

Happy Mother's Day everyone!! I hope you all have a beautiful day!

I have been checking the first page of this thread everyday wondering where everyone was and just realized that you had replied on the second page. I feel so dingy sometimes.

Watermelon--oh my dear what a beautiful family you have! And you look great! Sorry your daughter is giving you a hard time sometimes. I can't imagine DD as a 10 yo but I know the time does go so quickly and somehow seems to speed up all the time. My heart ached a little reading your post about her once chubby cheeks.

Julia-- Yea I think a lens with a low/wide aperture is going to be your friend if you like that blurry background look. You can still shoot on auto. I do that for the same reason as you and I'm learning but am anything other than professional! Thanks for the info/advice on the book!

We had DS and DD's birthday party yesterday. It was just a cookout at our house with family and a handful of friends and their kids. I like to keep it pretty simple. it was an honor to have everyone in one place celebrating my babies. a good day. I'll share pictures when I get back to the computer.

OT-does anyone have a blog? I love reading them and these are my favorites:

Kellehampton.com
Soulemama.com

Please share your faves or your personal blog!! Id love to take a look. I'd like to start one and have many times but never posted to it. Sometimes it felt too personal or silly or I just wondered who would want to read about my life but I think I just have to decide why I feel compelled to do it and just go for it if you have one why do you enjoy it?

Re: May 2011 Mamas - May chat! Happy Birthday!

Hi everyone!

I have been totally bogged down (and still am) but thought I'd pop in here for a few minutes to see what's going on.

Justine - I've always thought about starting a blog too. But I'm not keen on sharing so much of our family life. I have a lot of opinions about things and would love to share, but we don't put pictures of our son online (I've gotten a lot of crap from in-laws about telling them NOT to put pictures of DS on Facebook. "But it's the only way I get to see him!" Really? The ONLY way? YOU ONLY LIVE 5 MINUTES AWAY. That's a whole different rant....)

However, I love reading blogs! I use an app on my phone that updates me. Favorites are:
rhythmofthehomeblog.com (waldorf/natural living)
frontierdreams.blogspot.com (waldorf)
themagiconions.blogspot.com (waldorf)
younghouselove.com (house diy remodely type stuff)
http://www.kveller.com/mayim-bialik/ (mayim bialik's blog - I'm not jewish but I adore her)

There are others but they're mostly silly jokey ones that make me laugh when I need that (which is all the time!!)

I am so busy and stressed. I've been cleaning the house like crazy in prep for my mom flying in and staying with us tomorrow. Prepping for DS's birthday party on Sunday. Prepping for more family house guests next Friday. PACKING FOR OUR 1 WEEK ALASKAN CRUISE NEXT SATURDAY. So excited. Can't wait to go on vacation.

On top of dealing with all that, DS either has allergies or a cold. I can't tell. He's in good spirits but he is having a hard time sleeping because of his stuffy nose. Which means I'm having a hard time sleeping. I wish he would cuddle up in bed like he used to but now if I try and bring him to bed he just gets excited and wants to play.

So, awhile back I switched from washing my face with typical face wash stuff to doing the oil cleansing method (which I love! equal parts olive oil and castor oil and a few drops of tea tree oil.) And now I'm attempting to go shampoo free. I haven't washed my hair in a couple of weeks. Supposedly when you wash your hair your body overcompensates and produces MORE oil, so you have to keep shampooing. When you stop shampooing your hair keeps producing that amount of oil and so there is a "transition" period. Which I still am in. I don't mind the "fake" dread dirty hair look, but I'm hoping it works and my hair stops being so oily soon! I did get this dry shampoo from Lush and I love the way it smells so at least I don't SMELL like I have dirty hair

Re: May 2011 Mamas - May chat! Happy Birthday!

Julia,
Thanks for sharing your favorite blogs with me - I marked the Waldorf ones to take a look at later. The first two especially caught my eye when I opened them. I think I have some of the same hesitations as you about starting a blog of my own but part of me thinks it would be very therapeutic for me and I love the idea of being able to sort of archive our lives and sort through my thoughts. It's much quicker to type than write in a journal too.

That's cool that you are trying the no-poo. Do you just rinse it then when you're showering? I had heard some people use baking soda or something also...? Do you use anything or just water? I hope it gets past the "awkward stage." I honestly don't shower often and am all too familiar with oily hair as my hair is very thin and fine. I know some people cringe when I tell them I only shower about twice a week (my sister included) but I don't have the time and it's just not the top of my priority list. Even though I really enjoy feeling clean and having time to just stand in the water is really nice. But usually I have to get in and out so quickly it's not worth it. I only wash my face when I shower too. How is the oil cleansing making your skin feel??

Oh I'm so jealous that you're going on a real vacation with your sweet family to help with your DS! It's going to be amazing -- have fun! And good luck with all of the preparation and enjoy your time with your mama.

DD's big day is tomorrow. I have been feeling so weepy today. I think she has a cold too and last night's sleep was terrible and I woke up thinking I was breaking out in hives and have felt itchy and creepy crawly all day. Also, I am making a little Waldorf style doll for her for her birthday and it's not done yet. And it's not going to be done. I have to stitch the face, assemble the body, and make little clothes and a hat. I have all of the body parts but that's all. Sigh... she won't mind but I have to admit, I do. But I am just going to try to make her day special and have a beautiful day with my daughter. I just want to hug her and squeeze her and tell her happy birthday and be happy with her. She's such a joy and I really want to focus on her and all that she brings to my world and our family.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
