Hey Mamas. DH and I are looking into adoption after I required a hysterectomy at 24. We have two biological children, and due to severe food allergies, I was not able to BF for very long with either. I would love to try induced lactation if/when we adopt, but I'd also like to be well informed regarding the process, implications, complications, etc. Any thoughts (keep it friendly, please!), and especially stories of personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know anything about it but just want to offer encouragement. What an awesome thing to do and good luck!

Re: Induced lactation for adoptive mothers~thoughts, stories, etc?
I have HEARD (no personal experience mind you) 2 things:
that it is much easier if you have breastfed before and you may or may not be able to make enough to feed the baby exclusively breastmilk; most likely not. Kudos to you for considering it mama!

Re: Induced lactation for adoptive mothers~thoughts, stories, etc?
If you can get a hold of your local La Leche League- I am sure through their network you will be able to find people to help you.
From what very little I know, the fact that you have BF in the past is a good thing- your body already knows what to do. You will probably need a good quality breastpump to help get your supply up and running as well. I had a friend who had a disease and part of the treatment was a hormone drug that caused her to lactate and she was in her late 40's - she was very upset about it- but that is hope for you for sure

I relactated 4 months after I weaned my daughter. If you look up on youtube "relactating," a lot of moms have video journaled their journey with relactation.
