UPDATE 10/22/12-
We are now on acid reflux meds and we raised the head of her bed 8 inches and we have not had any night coughing!!!! They said it will take up to a week b4 it fully kicks in but we can see a differnce already. Praying this is our answer!!!!!!!!!!!! Acid reflux. I went to my DD spec today as we had a very bad coughing night last night...i told her i want to try acid reflux meds ( she had it very bad as a baby) as the inhaulers dont seem to be helping...

Re: **Anyone out there that thought your child had asthma but it was...
We had acid reflux induced asthma attacks. My son had acid reflux bad as an infant. He didn't spit up excessively but his breath would suddenly smell like acid. We were in and out of the hospital for over a year until we started back on zantac. He was on singulair, claritin, pulmicort twice daily, and needed xopenex frequently. We were off all resp/allergy meds within 6 months and off of the zantac/pepcid after 18 months.
The zantac helped almost immediately.

Oh wow this gives me hope! I so hope this is acid reflux and not asthma and we can get off the inhaulers! did he just night cough? was it brought on by colds? Was there any other signs pointing to acid reflux? she gets night coughs and the attacks r BAD...but does not seem uncomfy like she was when a baby when she had acid reflux.

Re: **Anyone out there that thought your child had asthma but it was...
Her coughing attacks could very well be reflux-related. I don't have a child with this problem, but some of my relatives do. The reflux cough can mimic "coughing asthma" quite convincingly. It's certainly worth looking into for your DD, especially if she isn't getting much relief from the inhalers. Good luck!

Re: **Anyone out there that thought your child had asthma but it was...
I just saw your other questions, and I can share what I know. Night and early morning seem to be big trigger times, possibly because of time spent lying down. Illness and certain foods can aggravate it. So can drinking a lot of fluids with meals. Other reflux symptoms aren't necessarily that apparent -- not even obvious ones like heartburn or refluxing all the way into the mouth. Sometimes it's just the cough. So if your DD isn't fussy or spitting up, that doesn't rule it out, IME.

Re: **Anyone out there that thought your child had asthma but it was...
I saw something about this on Dr. Oz the other day - from what I can remember he said that people are often diagnosed with asthma, but if the meds don't help they should definitely investigate acid reflux. You might be able to find something about it on his website?

dd has severe reflux and constantly wheezes and coughs. it worries me but 4 specialists have said its the reflux. she is better for 3 hours or so after prevacid and maalox. nights are worst.. we have an inhaler bc she has had bronchialitis 3x but it doesnt help.
