Re: **Anyone out there that thought your child had asthma but it was...
Sorry this is longish:
For years, I've been having periodic problems with severe nighttime coughing. This goes on for weeks. Usually following an otherwise mild upper respiratory infection, sometimes just following a bout of allergies. I've had albuterol inhalers but they don't really help much. Cough medicines do very little. The only thing that helps is sleeping with a cough drop in my mouth (a cough drop with a lot of menthol -- I check the packaging to make sure). Of course then I worry that I'll choke in my sleep, but it's the only way to sleep! A couple years ago I started getting more aggressive with cold & allergy meds, and that often seems to head off an attack. I take allergy meds if I'm having any allergies at all, and Sudafed (the real stuff) if I have any congestion. That helps, but I still have had some attacks that have spun out of control. A few months ago, I did some reading about reflux, and I started adding Zantac when I develop a nighttime cough. That has really worked! I haven't had one bad episode yet. So I think there is something to it! I'll have to keep it in mind for DD; she tends to cough at night sometimes, although not nearly as severely as me and she sleeps right through it. Our symptoms were mainly at night and with colds. His airway was reacting but the reflux was the true culprit. Ds was even on oxygen for a period of time because we couldn't keep his O2 sats above 80. He would get cyanotic around his mouth too. Hope it works for your son! It was a mom on a board that told me about the acid connection, if not my son would probably still have breathing troubles

DS has both. He is on heavy hitter doses of Prilosec and on pulmicort.
