on what to get the kids...

How specific are you?

DD is into a lot of character stuff (lalaloopsy, my little pony, etc). So do I just say that or say she wants this lalaloopsy - or she has these ones already.
Do you state what you're getting? I.E. She's getting a lalaloopsy from santa. She'd love more than one I'm sure so I'll still tell people but maybe they should know she will already be getting one?

Do you give one or two options or an extensive list? I'm typing up a list because I know everyone always asks...

Or rather - Here's the list I was thinking of sending out (only on request of course). What do you think? Too detailed? Not detailed enough?

Christmas Gift Ideas
Please no BIG toys – we lack space.
Activities would be great. Movie passes, passes to place like the biodome, museums, play areas, etc. Also contributions to gymnastics classes (taken at le petit gym) or swimming lessons would be appreciated.

Ideas for DD:
Lalaloopsy: Mini playsets, any of the fairytale theme mini dolls. OR Full sized dolls/accessories
My little pony: Please avoid the “wedding” themed sets.
Lego Duplo (Duplo is the size for ages 2-5 years).
Anything Hello Kitty themed
Anything superhero /batman/spiderman themed
Whales/Sharks figurines
Activity passes
Books/DVDs - especially in French - Brave comes out in November

Swim suits/gymnastics leotards
Clothes: size 4/5 – leggings are a good option, shoes size 10.5

Ideas for DS:
Anything Disney Cars themed (he loves the little die cast cars – hotwheels cars would probably also be appreciated )
Lego Duplo (Duplo is the size for ages 2-5 years).
Anything superhero batman/spiderman themed
Anything related to Dragons
Dinosaurs/Jungle animal figurines/Horse figurines
Activity passes
Books/DVDs - especially in French
Bed sheets and/or bed quilt (twin size)
Clothes: size 3T, shoes size 8.5/9

I'm more general...
For example - Star wars "stuff", lego, art supplies etc
Without giving being too specific so people can choose something in their own price range.

HOWEVER with very close family if my LO wants something very specific I will mention it by name and ask if they want to get that specific thing.

Oh yeah this is for close family. My parents, the ILs, BILs... They're generally the people who ask. Friends don't usually ask but if they did then yeah I'd probably give them pretty general ideas.

I think all these ideas can work for any budget - there are items on there less than $10 and some that are more.

I'm specific on clothes sizes and maybe mention if there is something needed like PJ's.

Otherwise I put interests (building, playing dolls, arts&crafts), which may include characters. Like DD is really into My Little Pony right now.

If we are getting a big gift, like the play kitchen, I have mentioned that they could use things that go along with that.

Depends on person. My brother I have to just out right tell size, likes and stuff, but mom has idea of size and likes of kids.

It depends on who it is for me. If it's an immediate family member and they ask, I will give them specific ideas. An aunt I'm really close to - an example was that for DS's 2nd b-day we bought him a train table set. I knew he'd want more cars for the train so my aunt picked out a couple. General friends I will say things like, "he loves anything cars, trains, etc."
