DS was in for his 3 year well check, and we discussed our concerns about his behavior (I've been wanting to get him evaluated for awhile, but DH wasn't really on board.) She wasn't full convinced he was on the spectrum or anything, but she did think it wouldn't hurt to check. He is quirky and always has been, is really smart as far as counting, shapes, colors, ect. but his speech is significantly delayed and I do think he has some taste sensories - he spits out food if it's a bad texture, is EXTREMELY picky, and sometimes gags himself with his fingers. He's also a tantrum thrower (which for a 3 year could go either way!) I guess I'm just wondering what to expect at an evalution. It's not early intervention, it's a the child development center and we take him there instead of them coming out to our house. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Probably just some toys and trying to interact with him to see how he responds. They just want to see for themselves if he's trying to communicate or wandering or if he looks interested in the games/toys/how he would play with them, will he imitate if they show him how it works, etc.

Re: What can I expect during an evaluation?
It may be one specialist or a few but they they will all basically do the same thing. Try to interact fact with him through play and conversation and note his behavior while they are with him. They will also likely ask you questions about his medical history, development and behavior. It is fun for most kids because they get to play with different toys.

Re: What can I expect during an evaluation?
They had all the separate parents fill out an eval. Then they try to I te react with the child as well. Since kiddos usually don't act their typical way in evals our doctor put more emphasis on the questionnaires we filled out

Re: What can I expect during an evaluation?
Ok, that doesn't sound so bad. He's great with new people and toys, his main concerns for me are speech and eating habits.

Re: What can I expect during an evaluation?
We just had a 3 y/o evaluation. They will play games, ask questions (like the psych will say 1-4-5-2 and the child will repeat it). It's really no big deal.
They will also ask you a TON of questions. Be honest.
