In celebration of Thanksgiving/Harvest, I felt the unusual Turkin was a good feature chicken this month!

Some facts of trusty old Wikipedia:

The Naked Neck is a breed of chicken that is naturally devoid of feathers on its neck and vent. The breed is also called the Transylvanian Naked Neck, as well as the Turken. Originally from Central Europe, it originated in Hungary and was largely developed in Germany. The name "Turken" arose from the mistaken idea that the bird was a hybrid of a chicken and the domestic turkey. Naked Necks are fairly common in Europe today, but are rare in North America. The trait for a naked neck is a dominant one controlled by one gene and is fairly easy to introduce into other breeds, [1] however these are hybrids rather than true Naked Necks, which is a breed recognized by the American Poultry Association since 1965, it was introduced in the Britain in the 1920s. There are other breeds of naked necked chicken, such as the French naked neck, which is often confused with the Transylvanian, and the naked necked gamefowl.

Naked Neck chickens

Despite its highly unusual appearance, the breed is not particularly known as an exhibition bird, and is a dual-purpose utility chicken. They lay a respectable number of light brown eggs, and are considered desirable for meat production because they need less plucking and they have a meaty body. They are very good foragers and are immune to most diseases. The breed is also reasonably cold hardy despite its lack of feathers. Naked Neck roosters carry a single comb, and the neck and head often become very bright red from increased sun exposure. This breed has approximately half the feathers of other chickens, making it resistant to hot weather and easier to pluck.
Recognized color varieties include: black, white, cuckoo, buff, red, and blue in the United Kingdom [2] and Black, White, Buff, and Red in the United States. [3]

Naked Neck trait
The naked neck trait which characterizes this breed is controlled by an incompletely dominant allele (Na) located near the middle of Chromosome 3. [4] Since this allele is dominant, individuals which are either homozygous dominant (Na/Na) or heterozygous (Na/na+) will exhibit the naked neck characteristic though the heterozygous individual will exhibit less reduction in feathering - true breeding members of the breed must then be homozygous dominant, and all individuals in the recognized breed must be also. Individuals which are homozygous recessive (or wild type feathered) (na+/na+) would not exhibit any feather reduction characteristics of the Naked Necks and, baring mutation, would be unable to pass that trait down. [5]
Scientific studies have indicated that the naked neck gene (Na) improves breast size and reduces heat stress in chickens of non- broiler breeds which are homozygous for the trait. [6] Additionally, in tropical climates if the naked neck trait (Na) is breed into broiler strains it has been shown to facilitate lower body temperature, increased body weight gain, better Feed conversion ratios and carcass traits compared to normally feathered broilers.

Liz, in regards to the egg. They looked identical to the other cochin eggs.

I'd sure be only picking those out, lol. Itd be trouble, Haha.

Everyone make it through Sandy? My girls and one boy are great! We're in pa by the way and made out pretty well actually. My buff brahma roo Sparky flopped me yesterday!! I hope he settles soon. Haven't had my boys in there and they are missing the hens

Could he have been upset with the wheather? Gee wiz. What's up with so many of us having roos turning mean.

I woke up to 26 deg here. Everyone elese having this bitter cold. Trick or treating was so cold we only lasted an hour.

Roos... ah... we loved our roo. He was awesome. Until he wasn't. Everything I read says that is so typical. They just get to a certain age and suddenly they can be mean. And, from what I read, there is not much you can do about it, especially if you want to trust them with the kids. I still look for our Roo....

We have had it easy, Sandy-wise. Lots of high winds and rain, very wet out, but minimal damage (some branches down, etc...). I just locked everyone up tight that night and crossed my fingers.

Can't believe it is November!!!

You all having this bitter cold? It has warmed up a smidge with the sun, but everything is still covered in ice.

I read that too about roos. Just get grouchy. I hope this roo stays sweet. He is a cpl yrs old I believe? I can't trust what the guy said. I'm trying to go by the spur growth. He's a really good boy. William got in the pen and was rounding the girls up wit a stick and smacking them. I was right there, but he "could" have attacked him in the time it me to get in there and handle him. Little stinker. I'm really pround of Solomon. He protected the flock, and cat, from that dang dog too. I'd HATE to have to eat the guy. I pray he stays a gentileman.

Our last roo was great. Untill he got me.

Dang hormones or whatever. Nothin I could do. I couldn't keep him seperate or anything. if I can't have a peacefull roo out there that knows his bounderies and be trusted enough to be out with us, than he's dinner. I'm trying to hold that line between pet and food, kwim. It's so hard. It was part of the original plan though. Lord know I'd keep every one if I could.

Gosh I can't believe it's November already. A friend of mine raises the turkens, I think they're so ugly.

Love all the baby pics. I'm itching to hatch some of my own! Our roo was really good until the boys started chasing the girls to pick them up and then it was like a switch flipped. Right around the 6month mark. He's still pretty good around adults. But the kids, forget it. I read that once they're a year old or more they calm down. If not I'll keep one of his sons and boot his cranky butt out the door.

How's your injured girl doing Becky?

Speak of the devil, so I look out to check on the chickens and one of my least-favorites Sadie has again gotten into my garden beds and fred followed her. they didn't tear too much up thankfully but in getting them out fred tried to take a swipe at me twice. I took my shoe off and threw it at his rear and launched him. LOL Starting to really dislike the little a hole. Those two always seem to be the leaders of the pack every time they get into trouble.
