We are looking to get our 5 (almost 6) year old a Nintendo DS of some sort. No flames please! We just can't decide between the DSi or the 3DS...then add in the XL versions...oh may. Way too many choices.

I know many of you have bought one of these systems for your children about the same age so I thought I would come ask what your suggestions/recomendations are!

So tell me...DSi or 3DS (or other?)...

I would recommend the DSI XL. We bought one for our youngest this past year and he loves it. I have read many negative reviews on the 3D version so we decided not to go that route

I would not get one with the internet option. We have not figured out a way to filter the content on the dsi. So we have the internet on his dsi password protected so he cannot use it at all.

Several months ago ds was caught looking at naked girls on the internet. My niece had watched him and was looking at **** on the computer so when ds went to use the computer the next day, a bunch of **** ads shows up in google ads. We have the content filtered on the computer and the laptop but we couldnt figure out a way to filter the content on the dsi.

My kids love their dsi xl. They don't like the 3ds at the stores - say it hurts their eyes.

As for the internet issue. We've never connected our dsi to the internet - we choose not to use the feature - so a complete non issue for us.

i have just brought the 3ds xl for ds. the dsi is being discontinued. nintendo will also start making the games just for the 3ds, and you cant play these games on the dsi or ds lite as the game cards are a slightly different shape. the 3ds has a lot of parental locks on it, you can completly lock the 3d function and internet functions so as it works just like the normal ds. games do not have to be played in the 3d mode, and 3d is not recomended for kids under 6 anyway.

I'm thisclose to getting the 3ds XL for him...but that would be like the only thing he gets!!! Which I'm sure he'd be okay with.

Yup! DD will be getting a DSi only!

this. DS1 & DS2 have had a DSi each for 3.5 years. They have never gotten online to unknown websites. They are both connected to our home internet, but limited. They now have each had the 3DS for about a year and like above, you can limit the options, including the 3D.

it has an on/off option, and you can block it with a PIN
