Re: Talk to me about mama's helpers / nannies

I'm in SA and had a helper that also acting as housekeeper during nap when I was pregnant with my second child. I paid her $10/hour and she WORKED. I don't think my house has ever been so clean. She also watched my DD if I went to the store, etc.

This is true. Location can play a factor but obviously you can find someone who will do it for cheap but I'd question quality.

Re: Talk to me about mama's helpers / nannies

I am in Northern Indiana...half of the population in our county is Amish...whenever I find a job I plan on getting an Amish girl (16-20) to stay with my kids at my house while I am working and maybe when I am on maternity leave. Those girls know how to handle lots of kids, cook, and clean

I'm blessed to have a 20yo and 18yo sisters that love my kids...also I have an AMAZING neighbor I do a lot of trading with. She's on her 40s and had a little girl late that's about a week older then my 2yo ds so we enjoy trading babysitting.

Re: Talk to me about mama's helpers / nannies

I have one. She's 13 and comes over once a week. (Twice a week would be ideal, but we're doing 1x week for now). She's homeschooled and her dad drops her off at 9, and she stays till 12-12:30 when I drive her home (before nap). Originally I'd thought she would watch the baby while I did stuff (homework for my MS), but with nursing and the AM nap... it's worked out I take care of baby and have her do whatever I need done. She's cooked muffins, done meal prep, cleaned bathrooms, sweep, vacuum...

I pay her $25 each week, and it's worth it. There was definitely an adjustment period as I figured out what was most helpful for me to have her do, and as I figured out, essentially, how to be a good boss. She's a nice girl, but she can't read my mind (dang it!), and won't know to do something if I don't tell her. It also works best when I am clear, and I show her exactly how I would like something done. Again with the mind reading!

Good luck- a mother's helper is money well spent. And you're investing in a good future babysitter.

Re: Talk to me about mama's helpers / nannies

I have a teenager I use occasionally. She charges $10 a hour.

Those of you that have responded, is that the same you would pay a babysitter? The going rate here seems to be $10/hr so I would assume I would pay a helper less than that since they wouldn't ever be alone.
