Medela milk storage bottles and #7 plastic
Curious to know what your thoughts are on the matter....I recently learned that while the Medela bottles are BPA free, the caps, however are made with plastic #7. The contact with the stored milk is minimal (when you defrost to mix the fatty deposits). Is it safe to use? I really like the idea of the bottles over the bags but I don't want to compromise the health of my baby and milk! Gee, we all know how precious every drop is!!

Re: Medela milk storage bottles and #7 plastic
I don't know much about this but considering how many moms have been using them and for how long I wouldn't be concerned. Our NICU uses them as well. I use the bags mostly but havea few bottles.
If you're really worried, why not use a sterile straw or similar object to swirl the milk instead of shaking (or whatever) the entire bottle after thawing?

I never even gave it a thought. It is really not somehting that I am going to get all worked up about. Its the lid.

Re: Medela milk storage bottles and #7 plastic
Aren't you supposed to take the lids off when warming them up? I thought the risk of using plastics due to chemicals leeching into the milk was only when heated. Leave the caps off and you should have no problems.

Re: Medela milk storage bottles and #7 plastic
as one of the first (at least around me) on the no bpa bandwagon, I think you're ok. I did it with both my kids. Very little contact. And as the plastic lids aren't clear or hard, I'd think they aren't polycarbonate (what you're trying to avoid) M says they're bpa free- and although I'm not willing to stake all on that, I think they likely don't use bpa in them. Not everything labeled #7 is bad- its kind of like labeling it "other."

Re: Medela milk storage bottles and #7 plastic
I don't heat the milk in these bottles. Defrost in the fridge and pour into the feeding bottle to be heated. In actuality, I haven't given it much thought nor have I realized the labeling on the lid (we've been using these bottles almost exclusively for our ds) until recently. Maybe I'm overly "cautious" this time around.....thanks for easing my nerves. I went into a panic frenzy for a moment there.
