Ack! Ammonia and barnyard!

Have been using prefolds and covers with no smell issues for 5 months or so.
I have hard water and have been using 1 tbsp of hard rock in my front loader.
Rinse on cold then a hot wash on heavy duty with an extra rinse.

I have to be careful because Dd is really sensitive
Sposies burn her bum within an hour and I once had a prefold washed in tide and her bum was on fire within the hour.

Tia for any suggestions.

Re: Ack! Ammonia and barnyard!

I had that with my son, 10 years ago. It was just with one (used) dipe though....I never did figure it out.

From what I've been reading lately though, washing with a bit of bleach should help. Or that's what people are saying on ds!

Oh and I've read a LOT of people say rockin' green doesn't work. So that could also be part of the problem.

What detergent do you use on your normal clothes?

I don't think that's enough soap. Try a "strip" wash and then upping the amount or changing soaps.

Ammonia is because there is bacteria in your diapers. I would use about 1/4-1/2 c bleach in your wash. I put it in the pre-wash so it's well rinsed by the time they are done.
I agree about the RnG, have you tried any of the F&C detergents like All or Arm & Hammer? No fragrance or dyes are in them which is what can cause a rash.

First I would try using some bleach and more of your current detergent. If that doesn't work I would look for a new detergent.
(I do think that regardless 1 tbsp is not enough detergent to get your diapers clean.)

third vote for this!

then do move on to other detergents if that doesn't knock it out.
