Vitamin D - better to go over or under?
So, my doctor said i need to be getting 2000 IU a day. I can only find 1000 IU drops. However, from other pills i take a day i'm already getting 800 IU. Should i take 2 drops of straight Vitamin D and get my 800 IU from pills (in total 2800 a day) or 1 drop of Vitamin D and get my 800 IU from pills (in total 1800 a day)?
Is it harmful to get more than 2000 a day? or more harmful to get less?

I take 5000 IU daily. So no it's not harmful to go over 2000 IU. Vitamin D is so good for you

Re: Vitamin D - better to go over or under?
you should check to see if Vit D is water soluble. With water soluble vitamins, you can't really get in too much trouble because your body will pass any extra. With fat soluble vitamins, the extra can build up and you can get in trouble with taking too much.
my guess is that Vit D is probably okay since it's added to lots of foods like milk and grain products. |

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which means that it is stored and you can in fact overdose on it. Toxic amounts are pretty high, but I would still confirm with your doctor. They know what your levels are and can monitor them.

Re: Vitamin D - better to go over or under?
Okay, so i went and looked on the box. The Vitamin D drops are D3 drops with 1000 IU per drop and are in olive oil, flaxseed oil, vitamin E. My other vitamins are pills that have 400 each so i don't know if that is fat soluble?
The nurse said she 'didn't know, but thinks i should do 1800, not 2800' Okay, seriously, if you don't know, ask someone else. I can't get in again to ask a Vitamin D question. Oh, yah, it was suggested to me by the nurse to go find a less IU Vitamin D

Also, I personally feel that for the most part, if you stick to whole food type supplements, you will have less of an issue with overdose. The PP is correct, though, some vitamin D is fat soluble, so be careful. Check what type is in the pills. Is it d2 of d3?

The D3 drops are by Natural Factors and are in Olive oil, flaxseed oil, vitamin E (the non-medicinal ingredients).

Re: Vitamin D - better to go over or under?
I thought I had been doing a pretty good job on Vit D, taking between 2000-5000 iu a day. When they tested my levels, they were super, super low and my OB put me on a once a week Vit D supplement that has 50,000iu. Just wanted to throw that out there. Even if you're getting what you think is a fairly high dose, without a blood test you can still be extremely deficient.
