Also, these tiles from Plan Toys. I purchased them when my daughter was a bit older than a year and we would just play with them, clack them and stack them. Now, at 4 years, we play Memory with them, as intended. One of the best things I've ever purchased.

Wooden rocking horse. My baby loved/loves it and plays at least a few minutes every day on it.

Re: First Birthday Gift ideas-wood and natural toys
First birthdays are kind of tough. While memberships and that are great ideas people tend to want something kids can unwrap so the next best thing is often consumable things like art supplies. There are some really awesome board books out there too, there is definitely a huge variation in quality of board books though. One year olds often like the tiny books that fit well in their hands. I highly recommend the books Baby Shoes by Dashka Slater, Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers, and Where is babies belly button? by Karen Katz These are the types of books you can read over and over without it getting too annoying because they are cute and fun to read. Some board books are just not fun to read aloud.

We just got our 1 year old a radio flyer wooden rocket and he LOVES it. I would also ask for clothes, shoes, his favorite snacks foods, stainless steel dippy cups, some wooden puzzles and maybe some wooden musical instruments.
