Is this a normal vaccination reaction? ((NEW PIC - UPDATED 72 Hours After Shot))
My 5 year old son had 2 vaccinations on Friday - polio and DTaP. He had the injections in his thigh.
Today (so 2 days since the shot) his leg is very red, hot to the touch, a little swollen, and itchy. Is this normal? ![]() (The picture doesn't show just how red it really is - it's MUCH redder in person)

No, that does not look normal to me.

Is he acting any different? Not eating, drinking, lethargic, fever? If not, then I would wait till tomorrow and give motrin to bring down any inflamation and discomfort. If he is having other symptoms than call and find out what you should do.

Check the VIS they gave you for that shot. If you can't find it or they didn't give it to you (I belive they legally have to) then you should be able to find it on the CDC's website.
I am pretty sure that some redness, itching and swelling can be normal, but I am not sure what point it becomes a problem.

Re: Is this a normal vaccination reaction? ((PIC))
Swelling at the injection site is a common reaction. Have you tried Benadryl?. It might help the itching. Poor guy!

It could be a simple infection from the needle puncture (nothing related to the actual vaccine). Might want to get it checked out in that sense - simple antibiotics could help if dr or nurse think it's required.
