What about small businesses like imagine or gmd? Any safety data?

Re: S/O Do you worry about lead/chemicals in cheap pocket diapers?
Yes, I sincerely worry about the China "cheapies" that many purchase on ebay and the like. No I do not have the same concerns about other US companies that manufacturer in China, because they are *required* by federal laws to test and certify their materials. The "cheapies" from what I understand are directly imported by the buyer and there is no guarantee at all of testing. You can't tell me that for $5 a diaper that these are not made with terrible labor conditions and properly tested. That is just not possible. With all the previous toy recalls with excess lead there is just no way I'd take that chance.
I am personally on a tighter budget when it comes to diapering and I'd rather use plain old flats and prefolds than buy cheap Chinese pockets off ebay. It bothers me greatly when people use their budget as reason why it is okay to buy them. I'm sorry but there ARE many other cost effective options. I don't like the China diapers for many reasons, but the safety aspect is honestly my biggest concern.

Re: S/O Do you worry about lead/chemicals in cheap pocket diapers?
I am not worried about it at all. I think any chemicals used in manufacturing that have the potential to cause problems with baby will wash out. Am I wrong? Please give me the actual name of a chemical you are concerned about.
I am not concerned about lead in diapers. Toys that a baby might chew on? Yes. Things like paint where it could become airborne? Yes. If there was lead in a diaper, it would be trace amounts at best, especially after all of the washing. Lead doesn't transfer well through the skin. Most babies get tested for lead exposure between age 1 and 2, and I've never heard of a baby having high lead levels because of diapers. If I am wrong about any of this, I would love to see some actual evidence that can be researched instead of speculation. |

Re: S/O Do you worry about lead/chemicals in cheap pocket diapers?
No, not worried. Most of our clothes come from China. All those PJ's and shoes you know...
It really doesn't matter if things are originally tested to be free of all those chemicals anyways, because all it takes is a company over there switching things up to cut costs and you have the the safe red paint on Thomas the Train items being switched for red paint with lead in it. It's parents randomly testing and complaining to the company, that leads to recalls because the company doesn't test each and every toy. I do lead tests to toys we bring into the house, so I had a few tests on hand. This thread had me curious and I tried it on the new Alva's and cartoon diapers I bought. No lead so far.

Can you buy those in a store? I just got some brand new Alvas and would love to test them.

Re: S/O Do you worry about lead/chemicals in cheap pocket diapers?
Yes I used to a LOT, infact I had zero PUL in my stash because of it. I just had fleece, wool, fitteds and prefolds for the longest time. The PUL kinda went against my reason for using cloth which was to cut down on chemicals. Now I am not worried about it so much, it just seems such a small thing to worry about now.
I don't own any china cheapies now though because the smell when they arrived was overwhelming, I washed them 3 times and could still smell it. bluck.
