Late Talker Success Stories?
Just looking for some success stories of kids who were late talkers and went on to improve/catch up.
My son is 27 months and learning new words almost daily, but pretty inconsistent with their use. He's finally starting therapy soon as well as being evaluated for autism to see if there's anything else going on.

My sister was a late talker (didn't say anything until around 4) then went on to score *almost* perfect on her SATs. She's currently in college!
Milestones are individual. Have you applied for Early Intervention? |

Re: Late Talker Success Stories?
Yes, he's getting early intervention, but they're not offering much, just 30 minutes of speech a month. He's going to start 1.5 hours a week. He is learning and progressing, so I'm hopeful he's not autistic. That's what scares me!

Who knows? I would just take it one day at a time. My mom did that after they dropped the "autism" hint on her with my sister and that was 18 years ago.

I have had 2 late talkers.
Both caught up. With no other symptoms for autism i wouldnt worry about that. There is a wide range of normal.

Re: Late Talker Success Stories?
DS1 was a late talker. We never did any sort of intervention. He was fineally understandable at about 3.5. He is perfectly fine now at almost 6. He is in the advanced parts of his K class.

Re: Late Talker Success Stories?
my ds had no speech at 4.5. He is 8 now and mostly caught up. He had fluid in his ears that went undiagnosed until we changed drs.

Re: Late Talker Success Stories?
DS1 was my first and I didn't realize how little he could say until DS2 came along and had a crazy vocabulary at 2.
each child is different. both boys were late in a lot of other stuff to so really the late talking wasn't that big of a surprise. (crawling 10 months, walking at 16 months)

Re: Late Talker Success Stories?
My son didn't really start talking until 36 months. Apparently he was too involved observing the world... he started reading very shortly therafter and is a super bright 7 year old now (though introverted).

Re: Late Talker Success Stories?
My older son was a late talker. I don't recall just how late though. I do remember listening to other children talk in sentences while my son was mostly just babbling. He now talks a lot. I wish sometimes he would talk less.
I am told one of my cousins didn't talk until around 5-6 years of age. All he would say was Mama. I understand he is fine now. No interventions were done as far as I know. This was around 40 years ago in Mexico though.
