What silly thing did you believe when you were a kid?
Yes, this is a spin off of today's This American Life.
![]() When I was five or so we were waiting in the McDonalds drive thru, and the line was going very slowly. In exasperation my mom said, "It's like they had to go out and kill the cow!" ...of course, I had no concept of cows as hamburgers. But I did watch a lot of National Geographic specials, and my favorite documentaries were about African tribes. After thinking about it for a bit I concluded that McDonalds was a tribal group, like the Bodi, and that before serving a feast they had to ritualistically kill a cow. Every time we passed a McDonalds after that I would strain to see between the slats of the fence surrounding the back garbage bins, expecting to see a young man in paper hat, holding a machete, slitting the throat of a horned cow over a large wooden bowl. I was always disappointed.

Re: What silly thing did you believe when you were a kid?
Road runners were blue... I was 21 or so when a friend kept pointing out road runner birds. I was like..What? Where? I don't see anything blue...
In my defense.... I thought they would look like peacocks... Tall and bright like the cartoons.

I thought all cats were boys and all dogs were girls. I would draw dogs with bows in their ears like pig tails. Cats would have bow ties and always be boys. Not sure where I got it from or why, other than we always had girl dogs and never had cats.

I thought that if you peed in a pool it would show up as a bright color all around you.

Re: What silly thing did you believe when you were a kid?
I lived in St Louis and Chicago. We would drive between the two every few weeks. When we got closer to the St Louis Arch, I was convinced it was leaning towards us, and would follow us to our house. It always seemed to be moving as we drove. I thought it was like a "god" and was watching over us.
I thought (because my brother told me this) that marshmallows grew on trees in Hawaii. I was going to grow up, move to Hawaii and grow marshmallow trees. I was going to sell Ambrosia salad from a road side stand. I thought my birth mark on my leg was a stain from spilling hot chocolate on myself as a baby. I think I was about five before I figured out the truth.

Re: What silly thing did you believe when you were a kid?
I was a really weird kid so I thought my grandmother's (now ex-husband) had his first wife's body rolled in carpet in their shed. They had a freezer out there and when my Mamaw would send me to get something out of the freezer I would be freaking out. I also thought that there was a Smurfberry bush growing in my stomach because I swallowed a piece of cereal whole(thanks dad). I was afraid to drink anything because it would make it grow and kill me. My mom was about to beat me down

I thought that the little tea pot song was about a toilet when I was little.

Re: What silly thing did you believe when you were a kid?
I thought my oldest sister was Wonder Woman. She had the same blue eyes, and dark hair, and was 9 yrs older than me, so therefore it made perfect sense. I thought it was very stoic of me not to "out" her when I realized it.
