If everything else fails, stool transplant from a healthy, screened donor (maybe you!) with normal stools cures 90-some percent of C. Diff cases within hours!

There are also the "big guns" of probiotics like VSL#3.

Only advice is to wash your hands, and babies hands. Cdiff spores remain on hands and must be scrubbed and rinsed off. Not sure if lysol kills cdiff but if not I think walgreens may sell cavi wipes which do, follow manufacture instructions (surface must stay wet for certain amount of time).
Nurse nurse nurse baby to stay hydrated and be sure to give probiotics at the opposite time antibiotics are taken. Good probiotics are refridgerated and ive heard anything else is just impotent. Get to a healthfood store they should have a section for them refridgerated, there will be kids liquid is best Last edited by aemarques; 02-03-2013 at 11:34 PM. |

My mom got cdiff after gallbladder surgery almost two years ago now. It took them a long time to figure what it was but when they prescribed flagil it improved pretty quickly, but her gut was a mess for months. Then they did a colonoscopy (routine, bc she's older and her father died of Colin cancer) and she relapsed a few months ago, and is just now recovering again.
It sounds to me like you are doing all the right things. I would think the breastfeeding and antibiotics would be a powerful combo (I actually even suggested to my mom that breastmilk -- my sisters -- might help her, because of its positive impact on gut flora, but she was grossed out). It is a scary disease but there are lots of treatments. Sending positive thoughts!

Re: Poor sick baby...C. Diff, please help!
If it makes you feel better my son has been on tons of antibiotics throughout his life and never got C-diff from antibiotic use. Ds has even been on a 10 day course of high powered IV antibiotics to destroy antibiotic resistant bacterial spinal infection followed up with another 10 day course of high powered oral antibiotics. One outpatient surgery and his rectal stump (he has a colostomy) was colonized with C-diff. The rest of his GI tract (the working part) was completely clear through. I don't know how we avoided it spreading from the rectal stump to the working part of his GI tract but we did.
I really really doubt the c-diff was from a 10 day course of a low level antibiotic typical used to treat ear infections. Something just doesn't seem right with that I would be thinking back to everything she was exposed to around that time. When our GI got the positive test results back the first thing he said was "huh, your son has been in the hospital recently hasn't he?" Yup, outpatient surgery with an extended stay in the recovery room. |

C diff hurts, bad. I had it after taking antibiotics. They tried me on just taking probiotics thinking it was just "out of balance". After two more weeks of pain, I had to go back and really make them them listen and understand my pain and then they finally tested a sample. Unbelievably embarrassing, but the only way to know. They finally prescribed Flagyl. In just a couple days I felt normal again.
The pain is abrupt and excruciating. It felt like I was being stabbed in my gut. It would come on suddenly and just disappear. I really thought I was going crazy. Don't let you baby suffer if the doc isn't helping, you may have to push for help. GL

Overall happy with Doctors responsiveness. Went in on Friday afternoon, turned in sample Saturday morning and he called with diagnosis on Sunday and we checking in today. He called and said he is consulting with a GI specialist. Been doing research, sounds like we need to pick up some Florastor , it has the specific strain of pro- biotics to counter C diff. Good news is her other sypmtoms seem to be going away. Thanks all for your support and kind words.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. I'm more prone to c-diff, having Crohn's, but I haven't had it yet (knock on wood). I've heard it's really hard to get rid of, though. I've also heard great things about fecal transplants.
