Liqueur question

Where can I buy Creme de Menthe Liqueur? Grocery store? Liquor store? And can I use it in my 11yo DD's bday cake...as in, will the alcohol get cooked out? She's asking for a mint chocolate cake and I can only find the one recipe.

I wouldn't use alcohol in a child's cake. Why not use peppermint extract in a typical chocolate frosting recipe?

I would definitely not put liqueur in a kids cake. I do cakes for a job and I would say find a chocolate cake recipe you like and replace the vanilla with mint extract. Then make some chocolate mint buttercream again replacing the vanilla with mint extract. That should make it nice and minty yet still chocolatey.

Thanks. This helps. I don't know enough about baking to start replacing ingredients without fear of screwing it up and couldn't find a recipe that tells me how much mint to use.

Peppermint extract *IS* alcohol. Extracts are oils extracted in alcohol. Now, you will need much less of the peppermint extract than you would a liquor meant for drinking as it is much more concentrated. But I just wanted to clear that up... anytime you use peppermint or vanilla extract, you are using alcohol.

I think the advice to replace the vanilla with peppermint will work just fine. But, I'm sure you could google and find a recipe that specifically calls out peppermint extract.

You can get Creme de Menthe Liqueur at a liquor store, unless you live in a state that sells alcohol in the grocery stores. The proof (or % depending on what you look at) in it is low! You can get some that is 10 proof (which is 5% alcohol). Liqueur is basically a flavoring agent when it is made in drinks/shots. Yes you can get ones that have a higher alcohol proof (or %) but generally speaking the alcohol content is low. I would use it in my kids birthday cake.

It was seriously one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten! It was labor intensive but I am not a baker, by any means!
