Blessed with Children, Struggling for More February

This thread is for women that have children who are trying to have more and struggling with infertility (IF). You fall into the IF category if you have been trying for more than a year or if you have known fertility issues. Some have secondary IF and some have primary IF. Some of us are TTC naturally and some need treatments of some type. All are welcome!

We also have women who are praying to make it. Due to prior losses or IF they don't feel like they should join a due date board till after the first 12 weeks. We are truly happy to support you as you transition. Please just keep in mind that we are a group of woman struggling with IF and be sensitive to that as you post. If you put a pregnancy ticker or smiley in your signature, please turn off your signature when you post in this thread. Thank you!

Please note: When your information needs to be updated, please highlight the area that needs to be updated. This will make it easier for me to update you.

If you'd like to be added please post your info using the format below. Please note: I remove names if you are inactive for one month. This really helps keep the list more manageable, if you would like to be added back, just repost your info.

Re: Blessed with Children, Struggling for More February

K, I haven't done updates yet, I will work my way through them. If you need anything updated let me know

Question, as I'm thinking about this. And hopefully I won't need to make this decision, but we are doing up to 4 IUIs. One in Feb., April, May and June. If they fail we will likely do IVF (we haven't totally decided if we will, but we are leaning that way.) Well we can really only do it in the summer, its just too hard with me teaching to do it in the school year. Looking at the calendar, if the June cycle fails it would be ending on June 24th or so. Would we have enough time to do an IVF cycle between then and August 20th? I would want to be done and have beta results back before school started. Does it take the same amount of time as an IUI cycle? Should we only do 3 IUIs? We've done 2 with clomid and 2 with injectibles in the past. If we do it this summer we will only have about 1/4 of the cost covered and would finance the rest. If we wait until next summer we'd have probably 1/2 or more covered, but its waiting a whole year too when we've already been trying for 4 and Hannah is almost 5 and there would be a 7 year age gap by time the baby got here if IVF was successful.
Then there is the quesiton of whether to do the low stim or regular IVF. Low stim would be about 8,000 with meds and the other is about 12,000, BUT with low stim chances are lower of course and there are likely no embryos to freeze and try again if it fails. All this things are making my head spin.

I just need to go back to worrying about this cycle and go from there, I just like to have a plan and its killing me that I don't have one.

Re: Blessed with Children, Struggling for More February

Hi Amy- Does your insurance cover IUI's? I only ask because now knowing all that I know about IVF, I wish we would've skipped all the IUI's and went straight for IVF. I have new reasons too for liking IVF- not only because it got me pregnant :/

One thing that I learned going through everything is that it is controlled but still unpredictable. You can develop OHSS after the egg retrieval, you can have polyps (like me) etc... that can prolong IVF and make it tough to do everything one month after another. I had surgery for my polyp, but then while I was in the middle of my cycle- we found another polyp so we weren't able to do a fresh cycle- instead I had to have surgery again and freeze the embryos- then it took another few months before we could do the transfer. It just doesn't always go as planned. If your clinic is near you- I think you'd be able to do IVF while teaching. I did it, and I know a lot of other people who did it also. Most of it is just getting quick ultrasounds- the shots and most everything else is done at home. The egg retrieval is about a day (you get put under) and the transfer would be perfect if done on a Friday or a long weekend- you will probably want to do bed rest for a couple days after. I think it is doable, but do what makes you most comfortable

Re: Blessed with Children, Struggling for More February

I have to agree with Rebecca. I did 5 IUI cycles (4 w/ injectibles) last year & just did one IVF cycle. My meds were pretty much exactly the same for the IUI & IVF (they added estrogen post-transfer, otherwise the regimen was identical). The monitoring regimen was identical. The timeline was identical. The big differences were that I needed DP to take off & drive me for my retrieval b/c of the anesthesia, & I did take the transfer day off.

I think that IVF gets built up to be this huge, invasive thing...and it is intense, but if you can complete a medicated IUI cycle, the IVF cycle (barring any special regimen) should be manageable. I was actually surprised by how similar to IUI it was...of course, my biggest complaints were that I had a reaction to the topical prep they use for retrieval & that I didn't end up pg. But I was going to try to call my RE today to try to get them working on insurance approval for cycle #2!

Re: Blessed with Children, Struggling for More February

I talked to dh about it today and we decided we would only do two more IUIs. The one this month and then the one in April. If neither of those work, I think we are going to move on to IVF this summer, I'm hoping the beginning of June so I'm not stressing about it all summer. It freaks me right out. Mostly the money but also the emotional investment. If IVF doesn't work that is the end of the road for us. We've agreed that we will not do any more treatments after that. We will never prevent, but we will be done, we may do foster care, but not for a couple more years.

Re: Blessed with Children, Struggling for More February

I feel so dumb. Yesterday I was so very sick. I was questioning if I could even handle a new born if lack of sleep did that to me. I had chills, shaking, and a host of digestive issues. Late last night, dh figured out that it wasn't lack of sleep at all, I had food poisoning from a cheese cake I ate. I made cheesecake sunday. But the recipe called for it to bake for 3 hours 10 min. and when it was ready to put in I only had 2 1/2 hours until we were leaving for church. So dumb me, I left it sitting on the counter. Then the recipe called to bake it for three hours at 200 degrees and let it sit in a turned off oven for 2 more hours. Well, 200 isn't hot enough to kill anything so I basically turned my cheesecake into a perfect incubation vat. Then top it off that when I cut into it after chilling, the middle was still runny. So what did dumb me do? Cut off the outside done parts and ate them. DS didn't want any and dh got a tummy ache after 1 bite. But not me, I ate 4 pieces. No wonder I'm so sick. But the bright side to that is I'm no longer so upset that I can't handle a lack of sleep. I'm feeling a little better today but my tummy is still super tender and I'm feeling really shaky and weak.

In other news, I had my consult with the OBGYN who's going to do my surgery. I'm a little nervous. I guess my last surgery I was at stage 4 endo. With what I told him and his exam he thinks it's pretty extensive in there. So he won't be doing a lazer/laproscope this time. He's actually going to be doing cutting / knife type surgery. He said it's more invasive and goes deeper but it's a better option for me as it will get more out. He knows that my number one priority is to have another child and so he agreed that if the endo was in a place that cutting into would take away that chance, he would leave it put- so no matter how bad it is, he won't take an ovary, tube, ect.... But he will of course clean them out, just not remove them no matter how warranted it may be. I'm good with that. He said on the laser one they tell people a 3-7 day recovery (mine took about a week last time), this time he said plan on a 3day-3 week recovery, and to take at least a week off work. I'm a little nervous now. My mom was going to come a few weeks before and stay for a week and three days after. But when I told her she is now changing her plans and coming just one week before and planning to stay for three weeks after. So I have to have one more pre op a week or two before hand and the surgery is all scheduled for March 21. That should set us up perfectly to start our first medicated cycle in May, and we'll start injectables and iui in June. I feel good having a plan in place. I'm just really ready for this to work. Next month marks the four year mark since we started actively trying for number two. And we've now been trying for 10 years, and I'm just getting impatient. I don't think I've every truely admitted to myself that I know my family may be done at 1 child. But when I was talking to the Dr. today and made him promise not to remove anything I suprised myself. He told me that if he left an ovary in that needed to come out I would get some function out of it until it got to bad and then I would have to have further surgery much sooner than if he just took it out (but he was totally fine if that's what I choose). I kind of shocked myself when I told him that if he would just fix me up so I can have one more child I would let him take out whatever the heck he wanted. I guess I always thought I would have at least 3-4 kids. I always thought as soon as number two works we would start trying for number three. Suddenly I feel like if I could just have two, I will quit pushing. My son won't be alone, and I'll be done with all the stress that TTC is for us. I feel surprisingly at peace with that. Now I just have to get number 2 to work.

Oh, and for anyone that is wondering, we lost the lamb today. It had a bowel obstruction and try as we might we couldn't save it. So now I'm having to milk a ewe to keep her from getting mastitis. While I'm recovering from food poisoning: fun times!

Oh my goodness Laurel! Where to begin? First- I'm so sorry about your lamb. What a sad couple night s you are having! Second- thank goodness you are ok after the food poisoning!!! You poor thing- you must feel terrible!!! I would've probably done the exact same thing though- I love cheesecake I am also so sorry to hear that the endometriosis is probably extensive- I sure hope your Dr can get most of it out and help your fertility. Though- I've got to say that after the surgery and the plan to go ahead with fertility drugs sounds pretty promising for you. Hopefully the result will be you getting your BFP by summer!!!!

Kelsie- Praying for Baby A- I hope it is good news tomorrow. You are in my thoughts.

Tina- So sorry about CD1 Hope this new cycle does the trick for you!
