Can you reteach a 5 month old to latch?
I breast fed until he was 2 months then he had to go on soy formula because of a milk allergy but ever since he went on formula he has been continuously sick with whooping cough, flu, and pnumonia so I want to start breast feeding him again for health benefits and I have cut out all milk from my diet for the past few weeks. I know I can pump and it would be just as benefitial but I love the connection of nursing. Is there any teaching him to relatch??

Well you can certainly try. He might figure it out again. You will need to pump to have a decent supply though because he's a much bigger eater now than 3 mos ago and if the milk isn't flowing I suspect he might wonder what on earth the purpose of this activity is!

You can try a nipple shield or one of those straw contraptions that you attach to your nipple and fill with the pumped milk. That way, he'll get something no matter what, but also be relearning to latch.

Have you been pumping for the past few months?
It is possible, but it could be a long uphill battle, so just prepare yourself for that.

Anything is possible. Have you been pumping to keep your supply cause if he is use to a bottle and instant milk (so to speak) having to work for it and not get much may cause lots of frustration.

Good luck! You might also want to talk to a Lactation consultant from the hospital the baby was born at. I remember I still called them 2 years after the baby was born. Otherwise try to contact La Leche and they will be able to help.

I believe it is certainly doable. LIke a pp said, it may be hard at first, but you can do it. Check out kellymom.com It is a fabulous breastfeeding support page.
I would start drinking copious amts of water, taking fenugreek and turmeric supps, and pumping at least every 2 hrs to get supply up. Good luck, mama! You are making a great choice! |
