Have i been starving hin?

Just feeling guilty and not quite clear as to what to do. DS is 8 weeks, EBF on demand. He's colicky, only sleeps when being held and even then is so restless and noisy. I've cut our dairy which helped some but he's still a fussy guy. Well today was his first day with the sitter as I went back to work yesterday. When I worked last evening dh gave him 2oz every 2 hours, he was fussy but no more than usual. Today sitter gave him 2 oz at 11, 25 mins later said he was fussing, rooting and sucking his hands, tried paci but didn't help so she gave him another 2 oz which he sucked down. He then slept in his bouncy seat for 40 mins. At 1p he was hungry so she gave him 2oz , same scenario as before. Was content and napped a little. Fed him at 3, 2 oz followed by 1 additional ounce 15 mins later (knew I wound be home soon and would want to nurse before long). When I got home he was happy as a clam, after snuggling a bit I put him in his swing, he was happy and then fell asleep.

He nurses well, seems to empty me and is gaining but now I'm freaking out that he's starving or something's and that's why he's so fussy. 11 oz in 6 hours, is that about right? My dd3 only ever took 3oz per feed and ate every 3 hours.

Is he growing and looking healthy? My little guy (6mos now) wasn't starving but I ended up switching him to formula about a month ago because he was not getting enough from me. I seemed to have the same issues that you did with fussing...he was colicky at the beginning and seemed to only get worse with time. Honestly if he is growing and looks healthy then I'd just say he's hit a growth spurt. I wouldn't worry about it, just keep giving him as much as he'll take

What is his output? The best way to know if a baby is getting enough is by what he is putting out. 6-8 wet diapers a day, 3-4 poops (disposable diaper count, cloth is higher). He could be having some high-appetite days (growth spurt). He could also be making up eating more from a bottle because he is trying to get the comfort that normally comes from being at the breast.

Formula would appear to satisfy him better, but that is not necessarily because he is "starving," more because the body recognizes it as foreign and has to shut down a bit to process it -- which means a baby who sleeps "better" and goes longer between feeds.

I agree, if he is growing and looking healthy, he may just be a bit of a fussy baby -- we all have our days and our quirks. Familiarize yourself with what signs of dehydration look like in a baby, and I bet you will feel better about his health over all.

Good luck, Mama!

Be sure your sitter is using the right feeding method for your baby: http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/f...ottle-feeding/

It is very easy to over feed the breastfed baby from a bottle (or any baby for that matter). There's so many reasons for a baby to be fussy, but chances are hunger isn't one of them if you pumped that milk that he got.

He has good output. He's only a once maybe twice a day pooper, 8-10 wet as in soaking sometimes through cloth diaper per day. I'm a nurse and he shows no signs of dehydration. I don't really think I've been starving him and he falls in the higher end if normal intake per the calculator on kellymom. It's more the personality change and the fact that he slept without being held that puzzle me.

You weren't there mama. Babies know when mama is there. They know mama's smells and they want that. Cut yourself some slack and know your baby loves you more than the baby sitter.

Absolutely. Babies can be sleepier or more letharic when mom is not there, they essentially sleep as a way to cope.

It was expressed milk from the two prior days. I have a great supply (maybe even bordering on oversupply sometimes). We block feed and I pump every morning on one side while baby nurses on the other, usually get 3-4oz sometimes a little more.
