Antibiotics during early pregnancy?
I have been sick for two weeks now.
I no longer have a fever but my throat is so sore that I cannot eat anything (and I'm a type one diabetic!!) and I wince in pain every time I swallow. My neck is actually sore to the touch, it's so bad. And my lymph nodes are swollen again. I know that I have to go to the dr but if they give me any medicine for whatever is wrong with me, will it hurt my baby? I have had two miscarriages now so I am absolutely terrified to take meds.

Re: Antibiotics during early pregnancy?
Some of the concerns with antibiotics are they can affect the baby's teeth when they come in after they are born. Not sure about what gestational age that is a concern for, though. I would not take antibiotics unless there was NO other option. It also messes up your gut flora which can weaken your immune system and play a big role in the rest of your pregnancy.
I don't know what you've tried, but you can try taking a bunch of natural vitamin C, zinc, and D, as well as sambucol (elderberry syrup). I'd be more cautious of that one during pregnancy, though. And rest as much as possible. There is a nasty virus going around that lasts about 3 weeks; that might be what you have. If it's viral remember that antibiotics aren't going to help at all anyway.

Re: Antibiotics during early pregnancy?
I didn't know about the teeth thing. I had to take antibiotics with this pregnancy super early on. I hope there's no effect from it though.

Re: Antibiotics during early pregnancy?
I was looking up the antibiotics/teeth thing and found this. It relates more to antbiotics in babies and children, but just shows that there are potential hazards.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17497416 I had a really long virus a few weeks ago. My teeth hurt, my throat hurt; I was coughing for weeks; it was torture. My daughter got it also and it didn't seem to last as long but she was still not herself for 1.5 or 2 weeks. I could feel the effects for 3 weeks. It was really killer.

Re: Antibiotics during early pregnancy?
Praying for a sticky bean for you!!!Before 8 weeks, there is no possible way it can affect your baby, since it's feeding off of the yolk sac rather than the placenta. It's kind of your bodies natural barrier. Even AFTER 8 weeks, it's probably ok with some. I'd definitely let your doctor know though so they can prescribe accordingly.

Re: Antibiotics during early pregnancy?
Dont worry about the teeth thing - that is only very hard antibiotics. I was on amoxicalin (sp) for a UT and the lady told me that it is a Class B --- She said city water is not even rated Class B
luckly we have a well! haha... Scary though that city water is worse then a week of amoxi...

Re: Antibiotics during early pregnancy?
I had strep throat when I was around 10 weeks pregnant. It was just like yours- I literally could not swallow my own saliva without extreme pain and the one night I simply could not even sleep because of it. Anyways, I took a z-pack (antibiotic) and was told it was fine as far as the pregnancy was concerned. I'm 32 weeks pregnant now. I would say you should take them, but I have a higher trust in doctors than most on this board. good luck and feel better!
