Why is it that the only carriers ever seen on tv or in videos are crotch danglers

?? Does this drive anyone else nuts?

Me too! I was about to "warn" a mom I know several times when I see her pics of her DD on FB, literally hanging in such carrier!!! I already told her about other good carriers when she was asking for advice, but I'm not close enough to her to be able to talk to her again about that...

Unfortunately I think most people think a baby carrier is a baby carrier, and most mainstream stores only mostly carry crotch danglers. Even if they do carry better carriers (like Ergos or Becos), the price point is much higher than a Bjorn and if you don't know the difference, why would you pay more?

When I was a expecting my first I was so overwhelmed with buying all the "right" baby stuff that I relied a lot on what others I knew had used and liked ... so yes I ended up with a bjorn. And hated it. But I did have and use a garage sale Moby only because a friends dad raved about it and showed us how he wrapped his 3 month old. Then I got an ergo on babysteals (which seemed so expensive on the time) and loved it. Now I own a huge stash and some fancy stuff .... but as a new mom those distinctions in carrier types would of been way too much to wrap my head around. If I had a knowledgeable babywearing mama in my circle of friends it might of been different.

Drives me nuts too. But now I make a point of giving all my pregnant friends and coworkers a halfway decent babycarrier, even if it's just an inexpensive ring sling

It's marketing. Baby bjorn is a 50 year old privately held company. Their market share is huge. By using product placement, they are buying advertisement minutes. The consumer sees "baby wearing" in xyz commercial/tv show/movie and then sees only the bjorn at target/Walmart/ babies r us and that's what they buy.

I will admit I have quite a number of carriers but my favorite when my son was a tiny baby was the bjorn. It felt the most secure to me and the most confortable. Once he was about 5 months old I switched over to other carriers.

And all I see on baby registries too. I had to reeducate 2 family members these past 3 months. They really didn't know any better and since Bjorns are all the rage, they thought it was a safe option. Not to mention expensive too. Some people equate more expensive with better.

I kind of figured there was some marketing behind it. I think it's funny to, cause now DH has started calling them out when he sees them to. Lol.

I haven't seen that episode of Good luck charlie I guess. I just can't help but think how uncomfortable it must be.
