Billing insurance yourself for your homebirth??
Anyone have experience with billing your insurance yourself for your delivery at home with a CNM?
Is it pretty easy? How exactly does it work? Please let me know of any experience you may have with this, good and bad, thanks ![]() I also wanted to add....I have Tricare as my insurance, so if you happen to have Tricare as well, please mention it, thanks

Have u called them to ask how you should do it ? They may have a form on their website to fill out.

Re: Billing insurance yourself for your homebirth??
I called my insurance today (michigan) to see if they would cover my midwife/homebirth and they won't at all. They won't even cover the prenatals because she doesn't have a licensed facility to bill out of. That's dumb. It would cost them about 20k less by paying for her rather then a hospital.

Mine uses a company that takes care of everything and negotiates with the insurance company for an oop cost of $100 to us. She is out of network but because they negotiated, we will be paying only in-network prices.

Re: Billing insurance yourself for your homebirth??
A CNM is an accredited provider in all states (with variations on supervision and limitations of practice, of course.)
I think this would just take some creative billing. Does she have a provider number, or privileges at any medical facility?

Re: Billing insurance yourself for your homebirth??
I don't have experience with tri-care but we are still struggling to get our first home birth reimbursed (that was 3yrs ago). With our second home birth I sent in a global bill and they asked us to separate it - one for my care and one for the baby's care. Once I did that we received our reimbursement.
