Help me make my kid stop saying these things!

My 4 year old says alot of inappropriate things for his age. His most common slip up is idiot When he says that then we threaten to take away a favorite toy or he can't have his time on the Xbox and right away he apologizes. We're working on it though.

We've also had great success by calmly saying "That's not a word that children should say. I do not want to hear that word come out of your mouth again." With my very willful son, I did threaten washing his mouth with soap when he would "test" me. One day he pushed that boundary. So he sat on the bathroom counter with a bar of glycerin soap in his mouth for 60 seconds. He's never tested it again and now warns his sister to listen the first time!

I don't believe and don't teach that there are bad words. I tell them they are words they can use when they are older, and give them age appropriate words to use instead. Then I remind once, and depending on the age and context, time out or ignore.
I'd remove whatever it is that is teaching him the words too, honestly, until he can learn to not use them.
