peeing outdoors

So over Easter my son said he had to pee and my MIL told his to "go pee on a bush".

I made him go in and use the bathroom (not more than 15 feet away) which she just thought was absurd. I explained that he doesn't pee standing up yet and there was no reason to pee outside with a bathroom right there.

In an emergency sure but otherwise I just can't see why it's ok for boys to just pee wherever they want to.

What's your opinion?

Re: peeing outdoors

I agree peeing outdoors should be reserved for emergencies, male or female it doesn't matter. Also I think it teaches a child that going to the bathroom isn't private when they are encouraged to pee on a bush for convenience sake.

I don't see the big deal as long as it wasn't in a street or something. When boys pee in a public bathroom with urinals it isn't exactly private.

No big deal as long as he wasn't facing the road on a busy street. My girls would never (emergency or not), but my son goes behind a tree if outside playing and I am fine with that as long as he is discreet.

I think in an emergency its fine, on the farm, camping, that sort of thing, also fine. But if there is a bathroom near by they need to use it. In my mind it goes if it would be inappropriate for a girl to do it then its also inappropriate for a boy. Boys don't just get to whip it out where ever when ever just because they are boys, manners are important.

Re: peeing outdoors

Not something I was excited about when my boys were little but when they are in the pool they drink? the water (it's a salt water pool so not as gross as it could be) and have to pee constantly. Instead of letting them in the house soaking wet we made a back corner of the back yard "pee corner". We have a 6 foot privacy fence around the back yard (and woods behind our house) so no one could even see unless they were in the back yard. I'm not proud of it but it works. I will say that at a birthday party (small immediate family only) over the summer my SIL was a tad astonished but soon realized the benefit of it.

I think boys and girls differ in what is appropriate in this situation. A girl would have to drop her pants and squat. A boy just unzips and can be discreet.

Don't have a boy yet, but this. I also feel there is an obvious discretion difference between boys and girls.

I only have boys, but I will let DS1who is 3.5 pee outside at our house as long as he goes behind a tree and can't be seen. When we are playing he waits until the last possible minute to have to go and by the time I round up DS2 and get him in the house he would probably pee his pants. He can't go in alone because I have a childproof knob on the bathroom door and he would let the dogs out of the house and I don't feel comfortable leaving DS2 in the yard by himself.

As long as he isn't completely exposing himself I wouldn't care.
