Weird reading test
My daughter told me that yesterday the teacher got her to read a book, but it was a funny book with some of the writing upside down, the letters in words in different places and some of it reversed (mirror).
Any teachers out there or anybody got any idea what this would be about? She is a very advanced reader. I am just very curious to know what they would be testing?

Re: Weird reading test
Was it a chapter book? My dd has a series that has pages like that. She may have been testing comprehension, fluency with a book that interested her, not a specific reading testing book.

I was a special Ed teacher but took a lot of classes on different ways to teach/test reading skills and have never heard of any thing like that.

Re: Weird reading test
I would assume your dd is preschool or kindergarten. Those book are used to see if I child understands print. For example the look at the page and see if anything looks funny on it like picture upside down, print going up the page or other different concepts. I believe it is called concepts of print but don't hold me to that one.

Re: Weird reading test
There was a book like that in the library. It had stairs and pictures and the print went in weird directions. It wasn't a test, just a cute kids book.
If it was an individual test, I'd assume it was one to see if your child understood how print should look. If she noticed it was weird, she probably passed. If the teacher was testing for a reading/learning disability, I'd think she would have discussed it with you first.

Re: Weird reading test
The concepts of print assessment makes sense. I had a look and apparently they do have books like this in the australian national curriculum and the teachers are supposed to use them in the first few years. So I am sure that is what it was! Also they did mention in the school meeting that one of their goals this year is not necessarily to get K kids reading but to get them to understand the way print works, punctuation etc. So that totally makes sense that is what this book would have been.

I am no help to the OP but dd1 would love this series. We may have to check at the library and see if they have it today. |
