Milk Gauges

In the discussion of milk gauges and how we all wish our breasts had them, I have learned an interesting fact about baby hand gauges that I thought I'd share.

The L&D nurse I saw runs a breastfeeding support group and she was showing me how the hands work as gauges of how full / empty the baby is.

So, you notice the clenched fists of the rooting hungry baby. Clenched is empty. As baby nurses, the fists uncurl and relax. When the baby is really full and done, the hands will be limp and relaxed. Between empty and full, they will be lax, but still a bit rigid when you try to open/caress them.

Helpful when you wonder if your baby has gotten enough. Perhaps you just have a very efficient nurser. And maybe it would be best to wake them and get them relatched or switch breasts instead of waiting 10 min and find baby ready to go again.

Wow, I'd noticed clenched fists when hungry but that's pretty cool!
