Other Drinks

My son will be 1 tomorrow. We have been EBFing and he does not eat more than 1 jar of baby food per day nor does he drink other liquids. He is not huge on the bottle and has not figured out the sippy cup yet.

Should I start giving other liquids in his cup? If so, what can he have? Should I still offer the breast before other foods or drinks now that he is 12 months?

All my other babies stopped nursing by now so this is new.

Re: Other Drinks

I think at this point its up to you I would just do water for other liquids and maybe you introduce him to a regular cup.

I didn't end up loving it but you can try a doidy cyp

Also the bjorn cup is pretty tiny and stable. My son wasn't in his current daycare at 1, but I've seen other kids there drinking out of cups at 1 there. He started there about 2 and they started him on a normal cup right away and he took to it fine. Made me feel like I was holding him back oh well (you don't realize what they can learn sometimes!)

You may want to think about introducing more foods just because he should be getting interested. I wouldn't bother with baby food though.

I'd offer a bit of water, too. Let him practice with whatever type of cup you choose and play with it a bit. We like the Avent Magic Cups, or the Klean Kanteen sippies. He will probably be able to figure out how to drink out of a straw, too.

I have tried to give him more foods but he is not interested and fusses. I do give him table foods which he likes more, but he will spit out what he bites off or gags. I will keep offering though and see if he gets better.

Re: Other Drinks

Straw cups are easier for breastfed babies to figure out, just as an fyi

Re: Other Drinks

My DS was probably 15 months old before he really got interested in any solids. I just kept offering. We never did purees, but we did do coconut milk yogurt, smoothies, soups, and other liquid things.

Some babies just aren't ready for solids yet at a year. Follow his lead. He'll let you know when by shoving food into his mouth like he's starving.
