If he wasn't checked by someone that specializes in ties it could have been easily missed. Many peds, ents, and even LCs aren't properly educated and trained to examine ties, and they just don't know what they are looking for. Would you mind sharing a couple pics on the tongue tie support group on fb?

I can link you when I get to the computer.

Re: Not gaining weight

My DD has lip tie and is petite. I figured it was because DH and I are small, but I'm wondering if it has to do with her lip tie now. She has a pedi appt saturday.

If there is a lip tie, there is probably a tongue tie as well. If it isn't causing any issues, you can decide to leave it. But it can cause future problems if not treated.

Re: Not gaining weight

Thanks, Connor. I will check her tongue after work just to be sure. My son also had delayed speech and what they call "lazy tongue" so I am keeping an eye on her speech. Since she's only 4 months, I can't really tell now, of course.

Also, here's the FB group I just joined. I am hoping it's the one you recommend.

Yes, that's the one. Great page. Loads of good info under the files section. Is breastfeeding going well for you? Any problems early on?

Re: Not gaining weight

He has been checked by a specialist, they have one that works for the hospital that he was born at. We do not have breastfeeding problems, just problems with the weight gain because of the reflux and his projectile vomiting. It has nothing to do with his tongue or anything like that because there are no problems with them.

It wouldn't hurt anything to rule it out though right? There are no specialist that work at hospitals, they are all private practice. If it were me, I'd share a few pics in the fb support group just to absolutely positive. Not all ties cause pain or issues with breastfeeding.

Re: Not gaining weight

Certainly rule out the tongue tie, BUT, my experience has been that when weight gain and projectile vomiting are part of the problem, there is always food related to it.

I highly recommend a food diarrhea and an elimination diet. Corn, gluten, eggs, dairy and soy are the most common culprits. However, any food can be a problem, which is why the food diary is so important.

Re: Not gaining weight

ENTs and specialists in this area have "checked" several babies that have been born with a local midwife and told the parents that there was no tie despite the midwife believing there was. The parents went to an ENT in another town and had their babies revised and all of their problems resolved. I would definitely look into the tongue and also food allergies. Cutting out GMO foods and pasteurized dairy would be first on my list.
