My poor dd, she has little blisters in her mouth, on her tongue and cheeks and two on her lips. She's nursing like crazy and I'm glad because we've not found anything she can eat without crying in pain.

We've tried jello, pasta with no sauce, applesauce, ice cream, yogurt, breads, beans, bananas, cheese, even pureed baby food with a straw! Still everything makes her cry. I'm avoiding obviously salty foods. She is wanting to eat and constantly asks for food then sobs at the the first bite. What would you try?

Eta- dd is 20 months and has no food allergies. Thank you.

Re: Help me feed my toddler with hfm!

Ask your MD for medication. We used to give a mixture of benadryl, maalox and lidocaine to help with pain and prevent kiddos from getting dehydrated.

I've tried the Benadryl and maalox. She spits it out.

With the prescription mixture, they can swish and spit or swallow so as long as she is getting some swirled around in there it should help. I would also probably try Popsicle cold to help numb and then other foods.

I will go get some. Good idea.

I will try the mixture again. She adamantly fought me and the moment it went in, it came out.

Re: Help me feed my toddler with hfm!

When DS #2 had that, all he ate was popsicles for about 3 days. Dr. said as long as he wasn't getting dehydrated it was fine. He wasn't hungry though, it would be lots tougher if he was.

When my kids had it, bananas were the worst! They said bananas still hurt a week or so after they were able to eat some other foods! And I agree with pp, they only wanted ice cream and popsicles, which is ok for them.

Re: Help me feed my toddler with hfm!

We haven't had HFM but my daughter got herpetic stomatitis when she was 2 and her mouth was full of sores. We would swab the inside of her mouth with the rx mixture before we fed her anything, she mostly had chocolate Pediasure for a week. The first couple of days we had to use a dropper then she moved to using a straw.
