Taking a weekend away from nursing 16 month old

My 16 month old still nurses a couple of times a day, before bed and during the night. I never feel "full" though so I don't know how much of it is just for comfort. Anyhow, I will be away from Friday morning until Sunday night. Do I need to pump to keep up my supply? If so, how often? Thanks!

Re: Taking a weekend away from nursing 16 month old

At that age, my daughter was taking 2-3 day breaks from me to visit her dad. While she was away, I did use my pump around 3x a day (morning, afternoon, and night) for my comfort. I wouldn't think one weekend would hurt your supply much if she isn't still nursing very regularly, but I would recommend taking it with you, just in case you get uncomfortable.

DS was 18 months when DH and I were gone for a couple days. I forgot to bring a pump with me, and I was in so much pain by the time we got home. As soon as he saw me he was asking to nurse though!

Thanks for asking this question. I will be going away for the first time at the end of June (Friday and Sunday) and my daughter will be almost 1. Bumping for more input

Maybe just bring a manual pump for comfort.

I agree... She is probably drinking more than you think and it would suck to be uncomfortable. But I bet your supply would bounce back quickly and wouldn't worry about how much you pumped to keep it up.

If you wan to keep nursing, I would say yes, absolutely pump. I got sick two weeks ago and nursed my 21mo slightly less than normal and got mastitis!

Re: Taking a weekend away from nursing 16 month old

When I had to be away for 36 hours (dd was 14 mos) I pumped in the evening (once 'after work' and once before bed and in the morning. I was so full in the morning, because after not pumping for so long I do not respond well to the pump. I saw her again at standard 'after work' time, so we nursed right away.

Going 8 - 12 hours at a time was not a problem for me (in terms of discomfort).

I would definitely pump, not to keep my supply up because it would rebound quite quickly but so I don't get plugged ducts and then an infection. I generally pump every 3-4 hours when I have been away for a day or two.

I would pump at the regular nursing times, even if I dumped the milk. I'd be WAY too full if I didn't.
