Almost three day old won't latch?

A friend's new little guy is having some difficulty getting with the programme. He is jaundiced and hasn't pooped since meconium at the hossy. He dropped a bit more weight than they'd have liked and they have her supplementing until her milk comes in. She is using the tube attached to the breast rather than a bottle. However, as of last night, he won't latch AT ALL. She can get him awake and rooting but if she puts him to the breast, he freaks. She is understandably concerned and upset. She is going to get a hospital grade pump today and has left a message for a private lactation consultant.

Any thoughts/advice/success stories?

Laid back breastfeeding. Allow baby to take the lead and get onto the breast their own way. It fixes most "my newborn won't latch" problems.

I'll suggest that. Do you know of a good instructional video?

id use a nipple shield so he gets on to gain. i know how dr's freek out and if hes jaundiced the weight will only go down more till he poos alot and gets milk in him to be flushed.

also sun and syringe feed when hes too tired.
mom must also pump to stimulate her milk to come in and out.

We used a nipple shield too, along with the tube on the breast. Also, if she can pump a little and put the milk in a syringe, then when he tries to latch give him a tiny squirt if milk to get him interested, worked really well with 2 of my babies.

If the baby won't latch she needs to pump and give him the milk some way. Either finger feed , cup, syringe or bottle in the mean time while she works with a ibclc.

A nipple shield is a great suggestion, but I wouldnt use it unless her milk is in. It's difficult for a new baby to get thick colostrum through the shield and it could effect her supply. I think these are all good suggestions

Re: Almost three day old won't latch?

Thanks for all the ideas! She was able to meet with an LC today and successfully got him on the breast. And her milk has come in as of this afternoon, so hopefully this was just a blip on the radar!
