Re: Do your babies run free?

My 11 month old runs free when I can supervise. But its exhausting, and sometimes I just need to get something done, so we blocked off our formal living room and made it into a temporary playroom. I also keep the playpen set up in the den where I can see from the kitchen. We have tile in most of our house, so learning to crawl and walk on that was horrible. The formal living room is carpeted...our go-to SAFE room. I don't usually leave him in there by himself though...at least not for more than a minute or two. I have older kids that will also play with him in there when I need to cook dinner or whatever.

We live in a ranch so stairs are not a concern here. We do have a gate set up between the main living area and the rest of the house. G's (13 months) bedroom is off the living room so he basically has full reign over the front half of the house. It is mainly there so the dog has his space away from the baby and so G doesn't get into the dog's food (because no matter how many times we correct him/redirect, he has a strange fascination with it.)

Free range here. We try to keep the stairs and bathrooms blocked off, but the whole house isn't very child proofed.

Babies roam free around here. I'm here and aware of where they are.

Re: Do your babies run free?

We do a mix of the 2, we had a gate at top of stairs to basement (obvious reasons), gate top and bottom of main staircase, and gate to the living room but only one doorway (she would go in and bang on my china cabinet while I was cooking). They didn't last long, took them down by about 18 months, except for stairs, which came down at 2 once she was solid on the stairs.
We have a brick fireplace, I covered all the edges with 2 layers of towels (folded in half, so 4 layers) and then put a duvet over the whole thing. We just uncovered it this weekend, she's 4 1/2!

I gate mine out of every room except the living room and their bedrooms. I can see into their rooms from the living room so they are never out of sight.

Re: Do your babies run free?

My DD roams free. Our main level is pretty small though. I close one bedroom door, block the stairs and that's about it. She'll wander into the bathroom and right back out. If/when she starts to notice the toilet or anything we'll start shutting the bathroom.

Our other level is a half finished basement. She's only down there when I go down to do something, and I let her roam down there while I do.

Yes. I gated the stairs and the laundry room where the kitty box and food were for awhile.

The stairs just cause I didn't want her up there if I wasn't - but trusted her to climb them.

The rest of the house was available.
