ER trip or Dr in the AM

While I was cooking dinner tonight, my 3 year old DS was building a tower with the full coke cans that were by the fridge. Seemed harmless enough at the time lol Well of course the tower fell over and the top can landed right on my 10 month olds' finger. She was very unhappy about it for a few minutes, now she acts like it's not bothering her at all. It was very swollen, now it's very swollen and turning colors. I can't decided if I'm overreacting to a nasty bruise or if I should get it checked out.

Sorry for the crappy pic, she's wiggly lol

If she can bend it, it's probably not broken. The doctor in the am will be fine. They can put a splint on it there.

I'd wait till morning and see how she's reacting to it. It most likely is just bruised.

Personally, I would see if it bends, ice it, feel it for any obvious deformity and give her a motrin. But, I am a - you go to the hospital if you are dying kind of a mom. If the swelling wasn't improving or she complained a lot, I would take mine to our Children's urgent care in the am for xray. Our pediatrician doesn't xray in house and woukd send us to a pediatric urgent care, so i would bypass that step.

I'm definitely all for skipping the ER if we can! I'll just keep an eye on it for now and see how it goes!

Something similar happened to my daughter's finger at 14M (something fell out of the freezer ). It looked really bad and she was hysterical, but it was totally fine. We didn't need an ER trip or doctor visit. Just bruised. I'm thinking with that kind of accident it would have had to be a crushing injury and not just a broken, so that would take a lot of force.

agree with PPs. If anything were broken she would demonstrate discomfort and not use the hand at all. Kids swell and bruise easily.

I would wait for the Dr in the morning. If she isn't fussing about it, I would think she would be ok. I accidentally partially shut the laundry room door on DS2's toes when he was about 11 months old. It left a red indent across his toes, and he was screaming and crying bloody murder. Luckily it was a weekday during regular business hours so I ran him to the pediatrician. Of course by the time I got him there he was fine and smiling and flirting with the nurses. The Dr sent him for an xray to be safe, but nothing was broken.

Re: ER trip or Dr in the AM

I'd wait until I saw no improvement in a reasonable amount of time before going in. Unless it was bothering her excessively so. But then a trip to the Dr costs us $200+ because we haven't met our deductible yet.
