Re: Blending sounds

The curriculum we use actually starts with just blending sounds as I make them before even really studying them. And they can't handle that

We are just going to keep working on it, and sooner or later they will pick it up, right?? Haha.

There are many days I wish I could send my kid to school just to learn how to read, and then take them back...

yep. I think so.

IF they are getting frustrated you could take a break or try something different.

Don't forget to just read aloud alot.

I think reading is one of those in their own time things

Funny enough- they don't care. I am the one that gets incredibly frustrated...they could go on all day long guessing completely wrong words without a care in the world. Haha.

I do like the way our curriculum is set up- because I remember with my DS1- he just didn't have the phonemic awareness enough to read, even though he knew all the phonograms. I assumed that because he knew all the sounds, he would be able to stick them all together. Little did I know that is a completely different skill! So, this time- we are starting with blending, then enforcing sounds.

I only read the OP. Are you saying the letters c a t? Or the sounds kuh ah tuh? The 1 st is much harder than the 2nd.

Re: Blending sounds

Don't have time to read everything, so my apologies if this is all repeated.

First, it is possible they are just not ready. There is so much emphasis put on learning to read in kindergarten that we assume all kids should be doing it at 5, but not all kids are ready then.

Secondly, work on letter clusters for beginning sounds, and then add the ending sound. For instance, get them used to doing consonants and short vowels together, such as ba-be-bi-bo-bu, ca-ke-ki-co-cu (c is soft before e and i), da-de-di-do-du, and so on. Then, add the ending sound.

You can also do it the super boring (but usually works way) of writing the blend on a white board and do a lot of, "My turn ___ (say the blend), Your turn _____ (child says)" and then repeat. I did this with my students after doing all the fun stuff first if they still weren't getting it.
This sounds very much like 95% intervention

No kidding. One of them actually offended me at first (I forgot to put my forum panties on), but then I was like, oh...you're fake. LOL. I'm totally ok if my just turned 4 year old isn't ready to read.
