Re: Is this name too close?

I personally think it's a lovely name and not "too" close for comfort. That said, have you asked your daughter what she thinks? She is old enough to have perhaps a proprietary feeling over that "sound" and maybe she's the one to ask in this situation.

Re: Is this name too close?

I think it's cute. The flipside of that is, like PP said, it may be too "cutesy" for you. Of course, I come from a family that has a thing for hard C/K names--Carrie, Colton, Kelsey, Kayla, Carly, Carson all in the same generation. But I also worked in a very small division where my counterpart was also a C/K name--my boss, while she could definitely tell us apart, had a hard time calling us by the right names & eventually just called us "Thing 1" & "Thing 2".

They are too close for me but I don't think it's a big deal.

I like the two together. But I agree that asking Abbie how she feels about the name is a good idea not only for the reasons above, but it's good to include older for baby preparations.

Re: Is this name too close?

Personally, I would get confused with the nicknames and get your kids mixed up all the time, but I also have that problem with kids whose names start with the same letter. There are a pair of brothers in our congregation who are Trevor and Tanner, and I still (after years of knowing them) have to stop and think which is which. My husband started calling both of them "Tanner-or-Trevor" and still does even now that he can tell them apart most of the time just because he thinks it's funny to get them going.

I think they are both super cute names and Abigail & Adalyn sound great together and not too close, but Abby & Addie are very similar and may be confusing to people like me who can't keep things straight or people who can't hear well. Abby & Ada or Abby & Dallie I think would be fine, but that's just my 2 cents!

I think the names will flow well but not the nicknames, and I would call Adalyn Ada like grandma.

See , I really don't like the name Ada at all. I also think it would be hard on DH to call his dd his grandmothers name . He is very close to her and is having a difficult time with her being sick and in the process of passing away. I really just don't know . I agree with the previous poster who said Abigail and Adalyn flow well together just not Abbie and Addie. We did consider using his grandmothers middle name Lucille . I'm not sure if I like it either. Emmaline Lucille lastname (9 letters) is a really long name.

Could you call Adalyn "Linnie"?

This! I think Addie and Abbie are too close, but the fulls names on their own aren't. You might find you like something other than "Addie" as a nickname for you new LO.

This, exactly. I wouldn't personally do it and I would notice it in a sibling set but it's personal preference. I know of a family who had an Andrew called Andy and an Amanda who ended up being called Mandy, and they didn't realize until the names were sticking.

Really, it's not a big deal and they will only live in the same house for a short portion of their lives, so if you love it, go for it.

This doesn't really apply in your case, because these are nicknames, but I thought I'd mention... If they were their actual given names, I'd caution against it because having two children with names that similar can be an insurance nightmare.
