In my experience, two mini pods is enough absorbency for a bigger newborn, or a light wetting infant, but the coverage wouldn't be enough.

The mini pods are narrow, so ebf poo would go off onto the sides of the cover. What we did during the time DS was in-between the mini and the snap in pod was put a slightly wider cotton doubler or preemie prefold underneath the mini pod to catch any poo that escaped the mini. That worked great until DS reached about 8lbs. By then, the larger pods fit well, and we switched to those.

Wondering if Echo work best for newborns? Has anyone used Omnis with newborns or are they too wide??

Echo definitely worked better for us in the younger months. The Omni wasn't released until DS1 was past the newborn stage (maybe 4 months old? Although he was born 6 weeks early), but I preferred the trim cut of the Echo over the Omni even as he got older.

I pretty much always used the Omni as an AI2. It was easier since we had the pods, and I preferred our BG 4.0 pockets to the Omni used as a pocket. The suedecloth liner in the 4.0 stayed dryer than the type of fleece in the Omni, and personally I found the Omni more challenging to stuff.

I've got a pretty big softbums stash. 20 covers, 24 bamboo pods, 1 super pod and 24 mini bamboo pods. I've got plenty of other diapers in our stash, but we don't use any of them anymore. Ds is 98% PL'd now at 27 months and they have pretty much been our go to diaper since birth. They are still in great shape for being so well loved. It will be a sad day when it's time to finally pass them on for good.

I really hated the omni on my newborn (though he was only 5.5 lbs) it was SUPER BULKY. I preferred the echos until ds was a toddler and reserved the omnis for night time and diaper bag pockets. We were able to use the echos at birth though without any bulk, it was really impressive!

We did this for a month or do after he outgrew just 1 mini pod for absorbency.

I definitely preferred Echo but the omnis cinch down too. It is just that extra inch of loose fabric looks more bulky on a tiny baby.

Of all the velcro diapers I have tried. The SoftBums is definitely the best. I think because of the wide tabs and they aren't exposed on the other side (covered with PUL)
