KA Pasta Attachments

My husband wants to get me a pasta attachment for my Kitchen Aid mixer. Does anyone have any experience with the extruder (press style one) or the roller with cutting plates?

The roller style looks sturdier, but the extruder has more variety of noodle shapes...

What would you buy?

Re: KA Pasta Attachments

I borrowed the roller one from a friend. I used it once. My verdict was that the pasta was cheap and delicious, but time consuming. Normal pasta is cheap and tasty enough that I can't justify spending 30 minutes or so when I can just pour dry pasta out of a box. There's my 2 cents.

I have the extruder, got it for Christmas last year. As long as I weigh the flour instead of using a measuring cup, I have fantastic luck with it... The pieces come apart and clean pretty easily. The pasta is much better than boxed, and I haven't experimented with much "flavored" pasta yet.

Re: KA Pasta Attachments

I love making fresh pasta with durum that we grind. But I found the kitchen aid pasta attachments to be a ton of work and they take much too long. I ended up buying a Lello pasta machine, and I am very happy I did. You just throw the flour and eggs in it, and it does everything else. I only use the ravioli attachment for the KA. It makes good ravioli (duh. I make fried ravioli for Christmas eve every year), and you can make crackers really easy with it, too. But overall, I really disliked the KA pasta attachments.
