Pot Smell?

My daughter's morning diapers (when she wakes up) smell like weed! Do I need to strip them?

Re: Pot Smell?

and you know why? J/K
Not necessarly all night pee soaked diapers can just smell ammonia builds and depending on how hydrated how much they pee and other factors such as the materials ect used morning diapers are smelly.
Make sure baby is drinking enough (sometimes strong odors indicate dehydration) maybe add a bit more detergent and an extra rinse or a splash of bleach to the next wash if you like but unless your noticing imediate icky smells from her day time diapers, or she seems rashy I'd likely not worry.

Re: Pot Smell?

Only gets rashy when she poops I think cuz she just started solids. But it's getting better now. The night diapers (just pee) aren't affecting her. It's definitely not ammonia smell, which is why I'm confused! I usually wash diapers as 2 scoops BG detergent full wash, then 1 scoop BG detergent full wash, then no detergent full wash. They come out smelling clean! Should I add a bac-out soak?

Oh and yes, I totally know what pot smells like. I'm almost thirty. Went to public school in the 90's, need I say more? :P Strangely enough, even my husband commented on the pot smell, and he never smoked the stuff (just been around it).

I've never smoked pot, but are her diapers by any chance hemp?

Re: Pot Smell?

nope, no hemp, which is what makes this weird!

Microfiber/suedecloth (which I swore I wouldn't use this time for this very reason, but the diaper style works SO well for us) and to a much lesser degree the organic cotton does it.

That is the best weird diaper smell that I've ever heard! LOL!!! I don't have a specific solution for, but most smells can be fixed with a good strip and increasing or changing your detergent. Also try spraying them out or rinsing before putting them in the pail.

This definitely gets my vote for favorite cloth diapering question of the week!

Are they pockets? We recently switched from pockets stuffed with hemp to layered cotton flats in wool covers and that knock-you-over smell has entirely disappeared!

Nope, not pockets. And it's not a knock-you-over (ammonia) smell. It just smells like pot (which smells neither bad nor good to me, but not what diapers should smell like!)
