Wing wicking on side snapping diaper?

I'm a new cloth diapering mom finishing up a newborn rental and starting to try different one size diapers. I recently prepped and tried the Babykicks Premium Pocket diaper on my baby (who is 11.5 pounds and somewhat skinny-legged). The diaper didn't seem to gap at the legs, but we got wicking in half an hour around the leg holes and front top.

When I changed him, the insert was hardly wet, but the wings were soaked, since they go on the inside front of the diaper. Is this common with side snapping diapers on boys? Does it get better when you have it on a taller rise setting? Is there any way to avoid this so that I can use the diaper? Maybe lay the hemp insert inside the diaper instead of stuffing it and making sure it goes between the wings and the baby?

Thanks very much for any insight you can give me!

Stephanie

Re: Wing wicking on side snapping diaper?

Yes, it is a bamboo velour inner with a Joey Bunz hemp insert. The wings themselves are lined with polyester fleece. I prepped by washing on hot then drying on low three times. I figured it might not yet be at max absorbancy but that I would try it on my (relatively small) baby. Should I have prepped more?

I have never had my side snapping diapers (green acre designs) leak at the wings. Typically if I get a leak it will be at the top front. It will happen if the insert isn't fully inserted to the top of the pocket (so he the pee pools on the pul). Or, if he has cotton pants they will push into the top and wick.

My first guess would be insert needs more prepping. Second would be insert placement. I tried the old design babykicks but not the new style. The old had side snaps, too, but always leaked out the legs for me.

Thanks! I'll try prepping some more and fiddling with the insert placement.

Re: Wing wicking on side snapping diaper?

We use mostly sized side snapping AIOs (bottombumpers and peachy green) and haven't had any issues like this.
My guess is they need a bit more prepping. If that doesn't cut it then I'd try adding absorbancy.

Hemp absorbs slowly and sometimes baby boys pee fast and hard so the hemp cannot absorb fast enough and you get wicking. If you combine the hemp with some cotton like a preemie prefold, the cotton will absorb fast and the hemp will drink from the cotton and should move through it. I can't use just hemp inserts with my son bc he just pees too much too fast for hemp.

Thanks! I'll definitely try prepping more and adding a cotton insert.
