How did you first learn about breastfeeding (before kids)?

Did some of your peers have kids before you and you were able to be around them while nursing? Did you read all about it in a book? Learn about it on a message board?

I learned about it from a book. Long before I even knew what breastfeeding was, I was interested in all things pregnancy/childbirth, and would spend a lot of time in the library, checking out books on those topics. Breastfeeding was nearby, so I checked out those books as well and was looking forward to the day I'd finally be able to try. When I got my BFP with my first baby, I had to restrain myself from trying to go to a LLL meeting right away, lol. I had to at least wait until I was a little closer to the birth.

My mom breastfed 6 children so being the second oldest I was able to learn by her example.
Thanks Mom!

I breastfed all of my children, some longer than others. Before I got pregnant, it never crossed my mind that I might breastfeed. Once I was pregnant, I just knew I wanted to and read EVERYTHING I could get my hands on.

I saw a woman breastfeeding at the beach when I was a little girl. She exposed herself a bit when she was buttoning up. My parents said she was disgusting.

I said, "She was feeding her baby and I think it's beautiful."

High-iving my little girl self.

Me, too.

I'm the 2nd oldest of 6 and my mom breastfed all of us, so when I got pregnant, breastfeeding just seemed normal. That was even before I knew all the benefits to breastfeeding.

You are awesome!

I have no idea how I learned about it. I am sure I read some articles about the benefits of nursing before I even was pregnant, but I can't remember. I feel like I always knew I would nurse.

I think my first real solid information and exposure was from MDC. I do remember talking to my mom and knowing my siblings and I were all formula fed. Never knew anyone that nursed when I was growing up.

I tried really hard to convince a former friend to nurse but her heart wasn't in it so she turned to formula quickly. She was the only person I had ever seen IRL attempt to nurse.

Made things a bit tricky for me as I didn't really know where to turn when I had so many issues with DS1 but we made it through. I hope to be the cheering section and helpful MIL if my boys have female partners if/when they have children.

Re: How did you first learn about breastfeeding (before kids)?

Both my mother and step mother breastfed their children. Between the 2 of them that was 10 children. Being the second eldest I of course witnessed both. I don't think it ever occurred to me to do anything other than breastfeed my children.

The only reason I even remember my step mother breastfeeding was because she once laughingly offered me some drops of milk on her finger. Otherwise breastfeeding was so much the norm to me it didn't occur to me to think about the babies breastfeeding.

My mom breastfed all of us kids. I'm the oldest so I saw it with all of my siblings. I never really thought to do any differently.
