Re: Eating peanut butter while pregnant?

yeah, i also heard the avoid pb esp. if you had a family history of nut allergies, etc. i think stuff about allergies is always really hard to prove, but i agree that it wasn't something i avoided particularly.

I think she should contact her doctor and ask him what HE thinks since there are varrying responses. But, that is ONLY if there is a history of nut allergies in the family....if there isnt...I wouldnt worry at all.

I have heard that there is nothing wrong with PB in pregnancy, and if you eat it your child will be LESS likely to have an allergy since they had it in the womb.

Yep, big load! You said there is no family allergies to nuts so tell her to go for it! WIC gives peanut butter to children over 1 year and expectant mothers because it is an excellent source of protein. Tell her to eat up !! The only thing I could think is it may aide some constipation....

Re: Eating peanut butter while pregnant?

I agree with most of the PP here. I have a Bs in Nutrition and we talked about allergies in several of my classes. If the family history on either side showed an allergy to peanuts I would say better safe than sorry. But since no one seems to have an issue she should enjoy. I feel that for the most part pregnant women crave things because it is what their bodies need. My sister was pregnant for several mo w/o knowing and the whole time she craved fruits, when she found out she was prego it all made sense.

I hope she enjoys her pregnancy and learns to take what most say with a grain of salt.

Yep. For this reason i've avoided nuts while pg and also while nursing. But if there's no family history i would be fine with eating it once or twice a week in moderation.

That is just completely untrue. Tell her to eat all the peanut butter she wants!

Re: Eating peanut butter while pregnant?

It's actually not a myth- just something that gets misrepresented. As a nurse, I've done some reading on this and also talked with both my son's allergist and pediatrician re: this. Because we do have a history of food allergies in my family, it was recommended that I avoid peanut butter or any peanut products while pregnant and nursing. Also, it was recommended that my first 2 kids not have PB until they were 2, the current recommendation is that kids with family history of nut allergies not have PB until they are 3.

But again- it only applies to those who have a STRONG family history of food allergies.

Re: Eating peanut butter while pregnant?

I think the no PB suggestion comes from the recomendations out of Britain where pregnant and nursing women are told to avoid pb and nuts.

Like everything else, you have to weigh the pros and cons.
