Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
Did you get a false positive?
Yes, I got a false positive for spina bifida. Were you satisfied with the results? Nope. Would you do it again? Never again. I also had an amnio that turned out to be completely unecessary. Next time I get pregnant I will not be doing any kind of testing in any form. No u/s, no quad/triple screen, no amnio, no anything. Yay for uninformed consent. |

Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
i declined it, and this is my first baby. I figured it wasnt worth the stress with the rate of false positives, and the fact that i wouldnt terminate if something was wrong.

Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
I did with DS and got a false postive for Down's Syndrome--I almost seriosuly hurt the genetic specialist who suggested that we "take care of it, if it were to have Down's Syndrome"--mind you, I got pregannt a month after a m/c.
We will be declining from now on. It absolutely does not matter to me one way or the other. |

Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
I didn't do it because as DH said "it doesn't matter how the baby comes out - 'healthy' or not, he's ours and going to be precious.
It wouldn't have made any difference to us how the results came back, so there was no need. Doctor wanted to do it "in case" so we could "prepare" - DH asked the doctor "do you really think any parent is ever really prepared regardless? I don't." End of convo...

Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
I had the triple screen with my first, the OB called me and said there is a very high chance that the baby had down syndrome from the results. She didn't explain AT ALL that the test is just a ratio/percentage of risk that takes age, weight gain, hormone levels etc. all into account... she told me I needed an amniocentesis, and I said, is't that risky... and she said "Not as high of a risk as your baby having the down syndrome, you need to do it.
I spent 2 weeks scared to death, letting family know, greiving a little. We decided to go ahead and do the amnio, not because it would affect our outcome (we would keep the baby anyway), but because I wanted to have a couple months to grieve and deal with it before baby came, so the birth could be fun/special and a time of celebrating. This was our first. We knew we still wouldn't/couldn't "prepare" but we could be a little more educated and ready for what we possibly could expect. When we finally had the appt. 2 weeks later, the genetics counselor explained what the test did and meant and that it was just a ratio/percentage of risk. OMG OMG we were so misinformed by my OB! They did an ultrasound and the specialist said the baby looked healthy and he didn't think it had downs, anyway... we decided to do the amnio anyway, and know for sure. He was/is healthy, no downs. I will NEVER NEVER EVER do that test again! It has like a 1 in 3 FALSE positive for defects my midwife said. We had a horrible experience with it and I would never consider it again, even if I was old and pregnant!

Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
I did the first 4 times. Not the last 2 times, and will not with this one.
My first 4 pregnancies results were fine. But my 4th pregnancy my son ended up having a fatal condition......Hydrops. The screening did not pick up on this. After that, I decided not to do the screening in future pg's. My thoughts are that it is not worth the stress. There is such a high rate of false scares with that test. I saw it firsthand with my sister.

Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
With my first and second I did because I never questioned what it was or if I should have it. With my third I was more educated and opted not to have it.

Re: Did you do the triple/quad screen?
This is how I found out that my ds had gastroschisis. I'm am so thankful that I did it so that he could be monitored closely and I know that early detection helped to save his life. I will do it again with this baby in one week. I know that some people get false pos. and some people say it wouldn't change anything...and I agree with that. But, in the off chance that you are one of the true positives, it is the best gift to know ahead of time so you can prepare yourself for having a baby that may not come home with you right away, so you can line up support (like agencies), and so you can prepare yourself for the possibility of high hospital bills. I think that being able to prepare helped me to feel more in control and able to handle all the dissapointments with how the birth had to happen, with not being able to bring my baby home right away, with all the stress that goes along with a child that has medical issues.
